Have you tried politely asking them?

You can't. Try placing your microphones away from sources of unwanted noise.

Quoting for truth. My thoughts too.

Dry-humping them avoids the clap.

Writing this down, it will be my words of wisdom when my son is old enough to go away to college.
Thanks!

Ditto.

Overzealous noise-makers tend to get louder and even hostile in an attempt to fuck up your recording when confronted. Especially if they are boozed up...

Wow the isotope rx7 is for sure the answer...
But at this point I don’t have the brain power or loot to figure that out...

So,  if anyone who uses it wants to fix my b0b Zimmerman recording from chicago on Wednesday ...lmk.

I was second row a little stage left with church audio fs in my headband.

It is a very balanced recording and my first of its size.
I am very biased but I have never heard a live show of his sound this good.

The foreign dudes next to me absolutely ruined a few songs.  We all had a great time cuz the spot was so money, but they just could not comprehend what I was explaining.....

If you beat them until they are unconscious, they will stop clapping.  :coolguy:

Many moons ago I smoked and blew smoke in anyone face when they came too close.  ;D

Cardiods can do a lot. Polite asking can do more.

Tried and true method, especially for GA stadium/arena type shows.

I think I found this link through another post here in the forum, but I couldn't find it in a quick search, so my feedback comes to this thread instead:

This tool <https://waxy.org/2019/11/fast-and-free-music-separation-with-deezers-machine-learning-library/> purports to offer after-the-fact track splitting (ie., take a master, then split it to separate tracks for vocals and instruments, etc).

Might be something that could be used to pull unwanted info (audience talking, clapping etc) out of a recording (and leave the good stuff behind).

I say something to the effect of "hey, will you do me a favor? we're trying to make the best recording possible and you're clapping so close to the mics really over powers the music. If it comes out nice, I'll make sure you get a copy." They usually will either leave or stay and become a blocker for you. But as someone else said, sometimes they're just drunk fools and any interaction just adds to the noise level  when the loud clapping would have been the better option after all.

Cable management is a valuable taping skill.
These come in super size

Gaffers tape can be useful as well

OK I wasn't gonna say it, but I do know a taper who claimed to have once handed out Valiums to the rowdy looking folks near his seats, then bought a round of beers...

Well. All hail ben turnB.

Just might be the greatest zimmerman recording of tour.

At an NMAS show in San Diego, Luther played a song where it was solo acoustic. When he started playing, an over enthusiastic fan started clapping out a beat. Really loudly and noticeably, like he was trying to get the crowd to clap along. Instead, every one was really annoyed. While the glares didn't seem to stop him, Luther either sensed the crowd, or he was annoyed himself. Barely missing a note he turned to the clapper, smiled and made the "cut it" sign (ie., slicing your finger across your throat). The clapper stopped, and Luther gave a smile and thumbs up.

Classiest way to tell a fan to shut up!

I've also had a similar experience when seeing Chris Smither years ago.  It was at an intimate little theatre in Berkeley and early in the show this guy started clapping along with the song.  To make matters worse, his timing was awful!  Luckily he was far away from me, but it was still very annoying.  It evidently annoyed Chris as well because mid-song Chris stopped singing to address the clapper.  He said in a polite (but somewhat sarcastic) voice "if you can't count, don't clap".  The crowd let out a collective laugh and the guy shut up for the rest of the show.   Thank you Chris!

On the whole clappers really, really suck!  And it can be a chore to get them to shut up.  Politely approaching them to let them know you're recording is always a good 1st line of defense, and it usually works more than 50% of the time.  But if they initially prove to be uncooperative, they will likely be an ongoing problem.  Unfortunately, it's just one of the hazards of this hobby.
