Title: Best way to get more juice from my Tascam DR-100?
Post by: hardrain62 on July 07, 2010, 07:23:47 PM
For those not familiar with the DR-100, it has 2 XLR inputs and +48 power for them. With a fully charged Tascam Li batt, and two back up AA Ni-MH batts, I can get about 3 hours and 10 minutes out with the phantom power switched on. Needless to say, I've had some REALLY close calls with that battery time. So, I'm looking for the best way to get more juice out of my DR-100 (which I love very, very much) for bands that play long shows, and festival use, etc. My initial instinct is simply buying two or three more Tascame Li batts, that I can change during encore breaks. I also wonder if some sort of small, portable AC power supply pack exists that I can get some juice from while my wall charger is plugged into the DR-100? I want to try to avoid buying a phantom power batt box, just because I like keep lineage as trim as possible, as it's really nice just controlling levels on one machine instead of two. Any ideas?

I did some current tests for the DR-100 at the 5V plug. See here:

It may just run on one of those 5V Li batterries that just have a USB plug. That is my next test. It did run off of USB port from a dell monitor so that is promising.

THe method some used for powering JB3s from the 9V DVD battery would work. I am testing that now with an old DVD battery. So far about 3.5 hours and still on DVD battery. (though has lost some capacity from its original 5400 mA)

You could try a usb charger like one of these

Or you could make one yourself, this video is making a usb battery using a 9 volt.

If the unit won't function during charging with a usb battery you may need to fool the unit into thinking it has data connection also.
Here is nice little write up on mini usb connectors and what voltages and resistances are needed for each pin out on one.

Yes, but instead of using the mini usb jack for power, use the 5V DC IN jack. So go from USB Type A plug to a DC Power Plug and power there. Works for me.

A more complicated but another effective approach to go from 9 VDC to 5 VDC is using a DC to DC covertor such as this:

But its needs additional parts added. (Input and output capacitors)
