Title: Computer interference during DAT transfer.....driving me insane!
Post by: mniven on September 07, 2004, 08:48:54 PM
I'm hoping that someone can help me with this problem because I just can't get a clean transfer to save my life.

First off I'm running Win XP and transfer using: Panasonic 3700 > M-Audio Delta Dio 2496 > Soundforge 6.0.

I've been transferring DATs for over a year with this setup and have never run into a problem before. But for the last few weeks I keep running into the same problem. Once I've recorded to my hard drive, the wav file has intermittent interference throughout. It doesn't really have a pattern in terms of frequency, but it seems to happen at least once every 10-15 mins., sometimes less frequently.

Here is a sample of the noise (it's a .wav, but it's only 15 secs. long):

The only thing I've done differently since the problem started is upgrading my Win XP with Service Pack #2. I always make sure to have my firewall, virus software, etc. turned off, but I can't seem to avoid this interference. And there is no interference when I listen from the DAT deck, so it's got to be on the transfer end.

To me, it sounds like it is some software program that turns on during the transfer intermittently, but I can't for the life of me figure out what because I don't technically have any processes running. Could there be some hidden things that I need to turn off in Task Manager?

I've got so much old moe. and other stuff that I want to transfer, but I can't......arrrrgggggghhhhh! Anyone have any clue what might be happening or suggestions on what to try? I'm computer literate, but not super savvy.

Thanks in advance.

Best possible answer is service pack 2.  I would try and do a rollback on it and see if that fixes your problem.  There have been a lot of problems since it came out.  Some people have good luck with it some don't.

I still haven't figured the problem out. I hate to revert out of Service Pack 2, but looks like I'm going to have to do it so I know for sure if that's what's causing the interference.  :-\

Cooker, please post back in here and let me know if you have any transfer problems with SP 2. Thanks.

its sp2, i bet the farm :)

rollback to sp1, go to control panel, add/remove hardware

Kyle, your job is willingly pushing SP2?!

wow...we just rolled out the reg-entry that forbids update from installing SP2.
be prepared for mass reinstalling :)

this thread made me go and get rid of all the sp2 stuff I found under add/remove.    now what about XP hotfix?  I got rid of any that had sp2 in name but there are lots of XP hotfix left.

Are you passing digi/optical into the DIO or analog?

If digi your problem may be not having your disk set up for DMA (Direct Memory Access) or you may not have a large enough buffer set in the M-Audio control pannel.

If analog .....dude

I'm going digital with a coaxial, not analog. Anyone have any recommendationsd on what the buffer size should be set at in the Dio panel?

I reverted out of SP2 last night, but haven't have time to try and transfer yet. Fingers crossed...

I was thinking about this today. Are you sure the DAT is ok? I listened to your sample and it sure is similar to bad alignment or tape read errors.

I thought the same thing until I got the same exact interference noise when I transfered using my Sony D7.

definitely test after rolling back sp2...that's likely the cause of your problem.

we know it's not the tape because there's not noise listening analog...problems arise in digi transfer...and it's not the deck because you get it on both decks.

aside from computer problems,
is the diginoise always in the same places? when you transfer using different decks?
have you tried different coax cables?

Regarding noise when listening. This isn't allways 100% sure. CIRC error correction is applied when listening in analog

If all else fails try reinstalling the soundcard driver.

I reverted out of Service Pack 2 and downloaded the newest driver for my Audiophile 2496 and I think I'm good to go now! Thanks for the suggestion. I should've tried the new driver long ago.

i'm planning on buying a new computer and was wondering what exactly is service pack 2? every computer that i'm looking to buy runs windows xp w/ sp2. i'm assuming it's an upgrade you eventually install w/ xp...but why should i worry about installing it in the future regarding transfers from DAT?
