i want to rip this audio in as lossless fashion as i can.  i think youtube maxes out at 128kbs aac, right?  i'm not looking for someone to do it for me, otherwise i wouldn't learn anything.

i was told to download the mp4 using keepvid.com and then remux out the audio... but i'm not sure how do go about that second step.  any ideas?

I've used "YouTube Downloader" before to get Vids for my kids...  It also has a MP3 maker built in so you can extract the audio...  Haven't used it in a while, so I'm not sure of the quality...  But it worked just fine for my kids...

Cant Audacity do this?

Import>RAW

Export

(I guess this assumes you have downloaded the video)

For what it's worth, I use TotalRecorder (www.totalrecorder.com).

I'm not aware of any way to intercept the compressed audio data stream from YouTube directly; I'd love to be shown that I'm wrong about that, but I figure that we're all stuck with re-encoding the decoded audio data, if we want to save the result as an mp3-type file.

It can, but depending on what format the file is, you may may need to install FFmpeg for the file to be supported.  I'm almost positive you need FFmpeg for MP4 files.

I think you are correct! - I just had to do this last week...for not related reasons. PowerPoint didn't seem to like mp4 - at least my version didn't...or something...Audacity saved the day!

you would want to download the entire video and then demux to avoid transcoding...

This. Most of the other suggestions are either too complicated or time consuming.

Copy the video link to the box and it will show you ever version available
Select the one you want o save

If you want just mp3 you can select that or just go directly the the sister page which is where the audio comes from

+1 on JDownloader, super easy and effective.  I also use http://www.downloadhelper.net/ as a Firefox extension.  You can set up its default behavior to just download the video, or extract the audio to mp3, or convert to another format, etc.  Sometimes JDownloader doesn't find a video to download; in these cases DownloadHelper always works for me.

Without any 3rd part extension?  My Firefox only has that option because I have VideoDownloader installed...  I never saw a way to do this without an extension installed.  I'd love to know how if this is possible.
