DVD Ripping Software
« on: February 10, 2006, 04:50:47 PM »
I need some software to rip dvds. Free is best. If there is a software that just lets you rip select chapters that would be ideal.
suggestions?

DVD Decrypter and dvd shrink

Both are as good as it gets.  I use DVDShrink quite often.  Both are free but only DVDShrink is updated anymore.  I think the DVDecrypter author was threatened by the RIAA/MPAA so he decided to stop developing it but the last version still works like a charm.

Actually, he was threatened by SOme compaNY that wanted to make sure he couldn't program it to defeat new copy protection they were planning to release.

I haven't found any update since DVD Decrypter v3.5.4.0 ???
Which is pretty good, but it can't properly decrypt everything  :(

Sound like someone may have just screwed around with it.  DVD Decrypter is pretty well known and if a new version was out I am sure it would have spread like a wildfire.  Thanks though for being on the lookout.

Ed-  I think you and I probably have all of the same programs on our computers because it seems like either I am speaking about cool new software or you are and it seems to always be the same software.  :)   Maybe its just great minds thinking alike.    +T to ya

There is no doubt that Decrypter and Shrink are the power apps of choice when it comes to ripping/encoding, so I'm not even coming close to saying that this suggestion is in that realm. HOWEVER, there is a sweet all-in-one app called DVDx that is a little clunky at first to get the hang of, but is awesome in it's ease of use as an all-in-one app. Not sure, but I think it might even be built out of the others apps. Another nice thing is that you don't have to decypt a copy to your HD, you can just rip straight from the DVD, which is nice if you don't have the extra gigs around.
