Recharable 9 volts in a MMA6000
« on: August 15, 2007, 02:13:32 PM »
The MMA6000 is the only piece of gear that I do not have a rechargeable power source for. I am sending too many alkaline batteries to the landfill which is unacceptable. :(

What rechargeable battery is everyone using to power this pre?

I would like to stick with an internal battery and for most shows would need about 4 hours of power.

Thanks,

Jamie

I have yet to find a good rechargable 9v for my mma6000.  the one i did have didn't last very long and never seemed to put out enough power so one channel was always lower then the other.

That's what I was afraid of. Most rechargeable 9 volts seem to only put out about 8.4 to 8.6 volts.

Right now I'm leaning towards trying this one out;

http://www.nimhbattery.com/mh-96v230.htm

If I recall correctly, a standard alkaline 9volt is around 550 mah and runs the MMA6000 about 18 hrs? So in theory this battery should give about a 7 to 8 hour runtime.

Well that sounds like it would work.

http://www.batteriesandbutter.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=PC16049VC&Category_Code=dupro

That is what I use...I think I pay $1.15 or so from the shop I buy my blank MDs at here in Atlanta.  I change them out about once a month because I use it quite often.  I always wait till the green turns to red before swapping it out to reduce the amount of 9vs I use.  i've also found that cheap no-name 9v cells are crap too...don't buy walgreens brand 9v!

If you get those rechargeable ones post your experience with them.

More important, how much time did you get once the red light came on?  I get about 20 hours or more from energizer 9Vs, but around 3 hours once the red light comes on.  This means I'm okay even if I find that the red light is blinking at intermission.  I've never had a situation where it died before I could change it out at leisure.  I think the NiMH cells die faster once they trigger the red light, so I haven't used them, if not they may be interesting.

I'm going to order a pair of the 230 mah batteries I linked to above. I'll post back some run times after I do some testing.

I decided to go with the 230 mah over the 300 mah because of the voltage difference. The 230's are 9.6v and the 300 are 8.4v.

I figured the LED on the mma6000 must change from green to red as the pre senses a drop in voltage to particular level. Hopefully the 230mah batteries will run in the same manner as an alkaline do, just not as long.

Used 2 (every other show slot) of the batteries above in all 35 shows i recorded with my nbox
and used all 4 in only one show of the 35 ( a 2 hour show) so they definitely work ok.

The "how long" part i don't know, cause i charged them after every show. I am going to do a test
this week to see exactly how long they will last. As soon as i have my results i'll post here.

Just cross posting information I came across in another thread.  Apparently there is a new li-poly 9v battery available.  It is 500mah, which is about the same capacity as a 9v alkaline battery, but operates at a nominal 8.4v.

If you want to use use these, be sure to test first.  I tried to gang four in series to run a DaviSound preamp, which is not high current draw, and they choked up.  If I briefly shorted the leads of the battery box they got it on, but I was not happy with this solution.  Regular 9Vs work like a charm with this battery box, also with a five-battery box (both built for me by Chris at Sound Professionals).
