h120 Recording Speed -> Sounds Like The Chipmunks
« on: November 12, 2007, 07:46:46 PM »
Hey,

A buddy of mine used my h120 to record his band recently and when I transferred it to my laptop everything was fine, levels were fine, etc.  When listening to it, it sounds like The Chipmunks are playing.  Everything is sped up on the recording.

Can anyone help?

Did he use a digital preamp as a front end? if so, the problem is easily solved. I had exactly the same issue until Joe on this board solved it for me. All I had to do was turn on my preamp before connecting it to the h120 (or at least before booting up the H120) and everything was fine.  Joe said that doing it this way allows the signal from the preamp to stabilize.

Yes.  I have a UA-5 in front of the h120.  He may have hooked the h120 up before powering up the UA-5.

For clarity's sake, what you're talking about is a preamp that also includes an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), not really a "digital preamp".  With any ADC in front of the H120, whether integrated with a preamp, or standalone, it's beneficial to use the process you outline when using one of the newer, more common bit-buckets (H120, JB3, MT2496, maybe others), in order to reduce the likelihood of a WAV header sample rate and data sample rate mismatch.

Been there, done that.  Common issue with the h1xx's.  Always turn the recorder on last, when the signal is being sent through the optical cable, and it will lock on correctly every time.  The 'chipmunk' file can be properly restored by fixing the header via audio software.

All I did was lurk around here and repeat what smarter people than me had said!  All credit to Cgrooves and SmokinJoe.....

Another easy fix for the H120 sample rate is once it's transferred, open the WAV with whichever program you use and just hit adjust sample rate to 44.1 or 48k.  I've done this in Cool Edit Pro and it literally takes 1 second.  ;)

Brilliant, Cheesecadet. I had to create the problem for myself and try your solution for future reference in case I ever forgot to boot my Mic2496 up before my iHP120 again.

Works perfectly in Audition 1.5.
