24bit file size?
« on: August 14, 2003, 12:53:43 PM »
I'm going to the Nickel Creek show tomorrow and I'm going to try out 24bit.  I'll be going straight from a UA5 to my iBook, probably using Spark XL (although I may decide to use DP4 if I can ever figure it out).  Question is, how much free space should I have on my hard drive for the show?  I assume it will be under 2 hours, but that's just a guess.

Right now I think I have 6 gigs free, but I can probably get that up to 10...

A 5GB show is equivalent to about 155 minutes, or about 2.5 hours

think of it this way, it's easiest to remember if you think like this

a 90 meter dat tape is 2GB.  we see that reminder all the time.  so 16/44.1 is about 3 hours for 2 gigs

24 bit is that x 1.5.  so 3 gigs for 3 hours of 24/44 or 24.48.  a gig an hour.

24/96 is 2x that, or 2 gigs an hour

Since I've never used a DAT, I never would've thought about it that way.  But hey, thanks. ;)

i was gonna say 2 hours = 2gb @ 24/48 but i forgot that the ua-5 can do 24/96...one thing you need to watch out for, not sure if thisis applicable on a mac but there are limitations to file size around the 2gb mark on windows pc's with certain recording software...

Yeah, I know W64 doesn't have that limitation, and I have to check on SDII and AIFF's.  I'll have it all figured out by show time.  ;)  Thanks.

sdii extended has no issues, and can do over 6 hours of stereo 24/96.  if you record split stereo, you get 2x that

what application(s) have this 2 gig limit?  I have only used wavelab.  I would hate to try something new and have a bad suprise.  Thanks

wavelab gets around the 2gb limit by having an autosplit feature which starts a new track at the point you specify without losing any data.
