Squeezebox help
« on: December 12, 2008, 11:12:32 AM »
Lately my Squeezebox Boom has skipping.  It doesn't happen all the time but sometimes when I play FLACs from my HD they stutter and skip.  I know its not the file.  Any ideas?

For starters:

Defrag.
Upgrade to latest SB firmware.
Upgrade to latest Squeezecenter.
Bounce your wifi or wired AP/router.

I'm running OSX so defragging isn't an option (as far as I know).
I just set it up less than a month ago so I have current firmware and latest Squeezecenter.

What exactly do you mean by bouncing my wifi?

Also if it helps, it only seems to be the Boom that is skipping.  My Squeezebox works fine.

I initially thought wifi interference but the Squeezebox is downstairs and the Boom is less than twenty feet from the router.

Bouncing wifi (or any device) = power off;  wait a while;  power back on.

Odd that the skipping impacts the Boom but not the Squeezebox.  Maybe they have different size buffers?  Dunno.  Confirm the firmware, if you haven't -- I bought mine a while ago, have had it online since, but only very recently (like the last 1-2 weeks) saw the firmware upgrade when I fired it up.

Are they 24- or 16-bit FLACs?  I've had skipping with 24-bit FLACs in the past, but for the life of me can't remember if/how I fixed it (most of my listening is 16-bit, anyway, so it wasn't a huge priority).

You also might check the Slimdevices forums for past posts or to ask the question there.

Check your wireless signal strength for the Boom (Slimserver > Settings > Status on your Mac). That would help rule out interference.

I downloaded the newest version of Squeezecenter, and restarted both my router and external hard drive and everything seems okay as of now.  I hope it stays that way.  Thanks for the help guys.
