My clamp screw cap disappeared! What do I do?
« on: November 12, 2004, 04:09:56 PM »
In attempting to set up my new AKG 414s at home so I can figure out how the hell I'm gonna mount 'em (talk about a different ballgame than Schoeps actives), I realized my mic clamp screw cap is still missing.  Someone addressed this a while ago, and in a fit of unusually keen memory recollection, I remembered the solution!  (And yes, I searched, but couldn't seem to find the thread.)

I ran out to the garage and pulled the Schrader valve cap off my old spare tire and screwed it onto my clamp.  Problem solved.  To whoever originally posted the solution, thanks!  And to anyone who has lost the protective plastic cap on the tightening screw of the clamp pictured below, just grab a tire valve cap and you're back in business.

I believe is was bean.

OH,that screw cap

Cooker, if you want to minimize the screw cap in the bottom left of the picture, you have two options:

[1] Replace the large-cap screw with the small one (with the alan head) that holds in the rubber piece - same diameter / thread as the one with the large cap, and it's just long enough to secure the mic-mounting stud.  I find the rubber piece stays in place just fine without it.

[2] Break off the large cap and find something that'll fit (not sure what)

yeah, sometimes i have a decent idea or two ;)

it was me and i think everyone who has that clamp should put one on there over the cheap piece of crap that it comes w/ :P

ive used it 30 times alone clamping to a stand pretty fiercely and it hasnt worn out yet ;D

i also have an extra in my taping bag if that one craps out ;)

Mine came off a few days after purchase as well. I actually like it better without that cap.

The main time I use it is balcony clamping, and there's one bar here in Nashville where it gets used pretty regularly. Anyway, after taping there one night, I realized it had actually screwed into the wooden beam...so now whenever I go back I know exactly where to mount my mics.
