Title: Cable replacement job for AKG MK46
Post by: ts on March 26, 2010, 11:14:46 AM
Can any of our resident cablers work on the AKG MK46 extension cable? I guess I'm looking for a non milspec job. Not sure what type of cable would be best for these. Mini star quad, belden 1804a or some other type of active cable? The MK46 cables have the mic body connector on one end and lemo on the other.

I'd look at Ramtek cable, or any Lavaliere mic cable, and you should be ok.  nice and thin, very pliable.  def. shy away from millspec.  to stiff.

how many conductors would you need?  I have wondered about recabling mk46 cables.

Could these cables be made from scratch, by chance?  Lemo connectors are available I'm sure, but what about the body end connector?

I'd love to get some made for more low profile situations....i.e. 3ft-ers...

I'm certain it could, as long as the wire isn't too difficult to come by.

how many does the stock cable have ?  i'd have to cut one open to feel confident in the replacement aspect.

if you don't already have the stock body end connector you are out of luck. the key component to the mk46 cable. the only other way i have seen the ckx caps powered was using this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/163116-REG/Audio_Technica_AT8531_AT8531B_In_Line_Powering_Module.html#features.

i had one. sold it on the board. the one i had was modded to take a 9v battery instead of the AA's. i don't know who did the mod or why it was done and can't remember who i sold it to. :P it had a mini xlr out y cable to the lemo ends for the mics and a mini stereo to the recorder. i never had a chance to use it.

huh..., interesting.
that sucker should run all sorts of caps actually.  ck1xx, audix, ATs, and likely others.
very cool.

I wonder if this could be an easy "hack" for active/extension cable projects...

If you have not already...send a pm to schoepsnbox (Nick). He can fix your MK46's.
