Title: AES out of MME
Post by: Tommy E. on June 12, 2004, 08:16:12 PM
When I try to run aes out of my mini me to my D7 i get a Copy Prohibt.  Does anyone know what the problem is?  Is it that it is 110 ohm cable without a converter to 75ohm?  Thanks

Tommy

Hey Tommy!

The AES out on the minime is a PRO output ONLY. You can only run dap1's, m1's, hhb's, d-10's out of it. The sony consumer decks (d7, d8, d100, d3) must come out of the coax. You can't even run a consumer deck in the patch chain of the AES out.

buying a 110 to 75 converter will not help either, the data stream is encoded as pro and you can't change that, sorry.

The V3 has one set to pro and the other is switchable, sure would be nice to get the AES on the MiniMe modded to be consumer compliant!

Hey Tim

Thanks for your help.  You are right, it would be nice to for it to work with non pro devices.  I guess it is gonna be that loose spdif connector untill I get a new deck.

yep, I had a P1 and a D8 for a while so I ran the P1 off the minime and patched with the D8.

fwiw - I had good luck with the orange radio shack coax cables, they seemed to hold pretty well. the blue monster cables were the worst...

btw - does it still have that "Satisfied" sticker on it?

yeah, it still has the sticker on it.  I guess I will have to try one of those radio shack cables until I get a pro deck.  That coax out is just so damn loose feeling.  Thanks again Tim.

get a monster cable - those plugs hold on tight.

wow...i pulled the output plug off of the back of my DA-20 mkII the first time I removed the cable...it held on so hard, it just pulled it right off.  I had to bust out the soldering iron and fix that right away.

for what its worth, with the talk of the mme spdf, my pro digital modified 7pin
holds on fairly tight, but i had a custom right angle cable made to run with the
mme but the right angle plug didnt hold very tight at all, but the other end that
was the stock orange ratshack was fine

maybe a right angle and some gaffer's tape? it doesn't have to look pretty!

I taped hot buttered rum string band last night and had gaffers tape all over the right angle connector and was still having problems.  when i was adjusting the gain the mme would move downward in my bag and my d7 was losing the signal.  all i had to do to fix it was to pick the mme up just a little bit and the signal would come back.  the connections seemed ok after the show but maybe there was soem kind of stress on the cable or something.

i feel you tommy, that mme spdf has a mind of its own if your coax doesnt fit right

your issues sound pretty typical Tommy!

one thought...

see if you can get Doug Oade to open it up and put a coax pigtail coming out of the back, ala the coax mod to the sbm-1.

fwiw when i ran a mme i used a cable with a switchcraft right angle rca and it was a very tight fit and i never ran into any issues with dropping the signal.

or just get a good set of cables (ala AM and zaolla), they have locking rca connections!

ur use bullet plugs instead of rcas(fit tighter and better than rcas)

thanks to all for your help.  those bullet plugs sound good but are a little more than i want to spend right now to try and fix this problem, but if nothing else works i may just have to go that route.  i was able to tighten up the connection with a pair of pliers by squeezing the shielding on my rat shack rt angle connector.  i think it tightend it up enough that it won't be a problem but i will have to set everything up monday and see.

good to see you at the show Saturday night Tommy!  Mine came out fine except for the last Track where the sound guy decided to flip CD's on me.  But andrew says his sounds fine so i'm going to grab that for my last track.

good to see you too.  my tape came out great except for the couple of times i lost my signal because of the digital out being loose.  when i get it transfered i will let you know if you would like to hear it.

the coax blows, aes is rock solid. worth picking up a "pro" deck. never had a problem getting signal to a p1, m1 or portadat via the aes. coax is for patchers only. 8)
