If you had 2 grand just laying around and wanted to buy a stealth/FOB setup, what would you spend your money on?
Tommy
edit: you already have a recording device

Schoeps MK4 > KCY 250 > Sonosax SX-M2/LS2
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=60756.0
It might run you a little over $2000 (maybe $2400) but it is the best choice for stealthing. It is where I see myself a few years down the road. It would also be a wonderful FOB set-up.
Otherwise, your best bet is DPA 4060s > DPA mma6000. That would most likely run you $1100. Nice but I don't imagine it is what you are looking for in a FOB set-up.

Is the $2k budget for everything - mics, cables, pre, ADC, recorder?

leave out the recorder.

Assuming the budget and timing is flexible...
1st choice
Schoeps MK4 > KCY 250 > Sonosax SX-M2/LS2
Won't find it new for < $2k, and good luck finding that setup used.
2nd choice
MK4 > NBox or NBox+ > recorder
Again, probably won't find the above new for $2k, and again good luck finding that setup used.
3rd choice
DPA 4060s > DPA mma6000
No problem getting new
4th choice
AKG CK91 > AKG NBox > recorder
Only 4th choice because it doesn't yet exist.
If the budget and/or timing isn't flexible, I'd go with #3.

The DPAs seem to be really easy to sell back too. Maybe go with the 3rd choice and search around for the 1st or 2nd. Piece those together and sell the DPA set-up once you are done.

AT853RX > Marantz 660 (ACM)
I'm upgrading my rig to the 660 this year. One box to crotch (that doesn't sound right ::))
Estimated street value: $1,200 w/ 4gb card

4022!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:D
-
schoeps /sonosax...
which I can get good prices on...

not exactly true - Richard (poorlyconditioned) has developed a box that powers the ck91 caps.granted its not available for purchase, but the plans are widely available. perhaps you were referring to a ck61 nBox?
if your recording device is the JB3 you probably want to look into something with an A/D or include that in your budget. don't know the exact pricing but HEB > sbm-1 should work pretty nicely and fit into your budget.
-
I am gonna agree with the call on the 4022s. I need a recirder (maybe the r-09), but I have a psp-2 that I don't use that much, and it's real stealth - so that would be the route for me. I think that blows the budget ;), but eff it, it's only $$ and - you know when you play back that first recording it will have just paid for itself ;D 8)

Ah, yes...forgot about Richard's project. But I meant to reference the CK61 NBox, which I vaguely recall seeing Nick was working on.

unless you have a stealthy pre you're going to need the Schoeps kit or something like the 660 with a built in pre. there's supposedly some stealthy Pelusso kits comming out this year if you want to go that route. MG is also reportedly working on an active kit for the SMS2000 mic line (and an MG NBOX is also in the works supposedly) if you want to go that route as well. FWIW the 406x DPAs can sound pretty crappy as an FOB rig if the tapers section is a bit too far back. i've made a couple of tapes with mine that are a straining experience to listen to...sometimes though, like when there's not much bass in the venue, they SHINE.
4022>PS2>Recorder would be an awfully stealthy and sick rig though...no additional mic cables to buy and it's something not everyone is stealthing ;)
-
$2000.00 budget
I'd go with the Oade ACM 660 marantz recorder
and a pair of Microtech gefell m300 microphones.
-
the marantz acm660 would be hard to beat. just add mics, and you've got a wicked analog section/recorder. perfect lights for stealthing too.
-
maybe a little out of the price range but how about
SKM140 > acm660 ?
-
that would work.
:)
-
hire the guy in your avatarto sneak it in=3 bucks an hour
contract his jedi mind tricks to keep back security=5 bucks an hour
buy enough beer to keep him working=priceless!!
-

It was a $2000 budget ::)

fwiw I usually don't share prices but this is what the costs were for me.
MK4 Matched pair: $900 Used (I have seen some go for $800 recently)
KCY 250: $525 Used
Sonosax SX-M2/LS2: $945 New
Very worth the money IMO...
alternatively:
NBOX $1200 New
MK4 Pair $800-900 used
Another option would be trying to get some AKG CK1x,2x,or 3x capsules, AKG CK91,92,93 (for the 300 blueline series), or KM100 capsules and running them into the lemo in on the sonosax, they would all work.

Thanks for the prices, Sanjay. I was trying to figure out how much that set-up would run me when I upgrade in a few years. +T

Huh? Really? How would you do this?

run a lemo cable from the back of one right into the sonosax. being sure the pinouts are the same but i'm pretty sure they are.
