Hey guys, so I'm slowly settling into my new place and I think that I've decided that I would like a rack just for my stereo gear and I'll stick the TV on something.
I'm looking for something with 4 glass shelves, dark wood preferred, and not too tall - I've seen a lot in person at local hi-fi places but they're all pretty tall.
Any recommendations on places to look?
thanks

watch ubid...the plateau stuff pops up there all the time...that is where I got my plateau rack....for about half of what was charged in normal retail outlets

We are authorized dealers for Target and Apollo stands. Apollo has a series called the 'Real Wood Soprano' that has glass shelves. http://www.apollohifi.co.uk/realwoodsoprano.htm (http://www.apollohifi.co.uk/realwoodsoprano.htm). Both Apollo and Target can be drop shipped from Niagra Falls, NY. If you see anything you like, please let me know.
Thanks,
Chris

Does anyone know what kind of rack this is? I think it looks really sharp.

That looks like a DIY rack based on the TNT design here: http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/flexye.html

Nice! Thanks for the link. I have access to threaded rod at work, so now I've got some ideas.

I'm building one of these. I like the looks of the one made of clear lucite plastic, but I'm going with solid maple butcher block. I have not decided on how I'll finish the wood shelves yet.
-
I made one of the TNT shelves with pine. I finished with a light stain (5 coats). If you build one, go for the 4-rod option. It's harder to even up the shelves, supposedly, but a heck of a lot more stable. I made mine with three and could never put anything heavy on the top two shelves.
I'd love to make another some day. The cost is a bit prohibitive, though. It was about $85-100 for me to build that, and I had some stuff already available.

Anyone know where you could pick up a big sheet of the clear acrylic (plastic) for the shelves? It would be 1/2 or 3/4" thick, so it would probably be pretty heavy if I wanted to make 5 or 6 shelves. Here is the one from the TNT site.

figured this would be a good thread to put this in:
my 1st flexirack - did the 4 rod version for stability. what do you all think?

*go to "all sizes" for larger picture*
it turned out decent, although i need to do some touch up paint on the hardware. ~$100 invested and a bit of time (nothing else to do) for painting and construction. this thing is solid as a tank.
peace,

first of all, love the looks of that gear 8)
second I think the rack looks great
well done

What material did you use for the shelves?
-
thanks Tim!
Matt D - used MDF actually. i would have liked to have something a bit better, but money was tight as i just bought a new couch.

That looks beautiful. I should do that..... one of these days.
-
Nice rack. :)
How much time did it take you to make?
-
all told it probably took about 5 hours over a few days i would guess. i spent more time reading waiting for the paint to dry for recoat :P

there is a guy here who runs a junk / antique shop and he sells granite slabs from custom counters (usually the sink cut out part) for $20 / per.
they weight around 60lbs, and are beautiful. I have a matching pair that I used as amp stands, but have since put my speakers on them (big difference, btw...better than spikes).
I was thinking about getting 3 more of them and trying to make a rack, but am scared about drilling into it w/o them shattering or getting ruined somehow.
-
60 lbs? No way you could safely put up a rack that's THAT top-heavy. How thick are the slabs? Anything more than 1/2" thick is overkill. I'll have to ask some of the guys at work about machining granite.
-
a 3 shelf job w/about 15" between racks and spiked feet going out at an angle was what I was thinking.
I've seen 100+lb turn table racks, so It can be done.
the slabs are probably 1.5" thick, at least.
-
Yeah, but aren't those TT racks generally single-shelf? Not trying to discourage, just thinking that's quite a challenge to have 60 lbs nearly 4 feet in the air. You'll need some pretty sturdy rods to get that to work. The wooden "flexy" shelf I built was a little unstable with anything more than my laptop on the top shelf. That used 1/2" rods, I think.
You can get some threaded and plated 1" thick steel rods at McMaster for under $20 each for 3' lengths. They have thicknesses up to 2". If granite is machinable, maybe I'll make another rack out of that.
-
there ya go.
I'm thinking mono blocks on the bottom (there well over 100lbs right there) will hold it down.
the shit is so handsome, I just want to do something w/it.
its a shame to use them as I am as they are so pretty.
