Title: Portable FLAC player
Post by: dmonkey on June 29, 2007, 12:54:54 AM
I'd like to find a portable harddrive-based player that will decode FLAC format. I have a long commute each day and I hate to have to burn CDs to listen to any of the stuff I've downloaded. I'd like to have sort of an "iPod-type experience" with my live FLAC files -- ie. just USB the player to the computer and transfer and I'm ready to run.

What are the options out there for portables that decode FLAC? I understand that the iRivers will do this with Rockbox, but are there other options? Ideally I'd like to keep price down, as I already have an iPod and my wife already looked at my crazy when I proposed the idea of another portable player the other day.  ;D

My apologies if this has been discussed before. I tried searching and didn't have much luck.

Thanks in advance!

Why not just convert flacs to Apple Lossless for the Ipod you already own?

You could also use any pocket pc and conduit's Pocket Player (www.conduits.com). It plays flac files. I think that I have tested up to 24-bit 96kHz with it. You can use SD media to put your flac files on and swap out different SD cards.

If you get one with Bluetooth, you can listen over Bluetooth headphones.

I think that Pocket Player will work with Windows Mobile phones too.

If your wife wants to have you committed at that point I would go with the iPod idea.  :-)

I was looking for a flac player for exactly the same reason.  I never found what I wanted that could play flacs and record 24/96 so I gave up on flac and bought a used MT.  To make a long story short, I use the MT now to play back MP3s though a cassette adapter in the car.  I never thought I'd play MP3s but that works more than well enough for the playback system in my old car.

Pick up an iriver H100 or H300 series and rockbox it and your set.

All are great choices.  I've eyed the Vibez for awhile but it's hard to beat the Karma.  I got one for under 100 bucks on Ebay.  Works like a charm.  20GB HD which is bigger than most units.  JMO.

The Rio Karma plays/played FLAC right out of the box.  I've had one for a while but I've dropped it a few times and the HD freezes up on me all the time now.

Thanks everyone for the info. I hadn't really ever looked at the Vibez thing before -- looks pretty cool. I noticed there are a lot of iRivers on eBay right now. I might give one of those a try.

Thanks!!!

I had one and it died about 6 months after I got it.

do you really need portable flacs?

I want portable FLACs because I have a lot of live music in FLAC format grabbed from torrent sites and I have no real convenient way to listen to it all. I hate burning and storing a bunch of CDs, and I really don't relish the idea of converting FLAC to MP3 to listen on my iPod. Someone posted earlier about converting to Apple lossless format for iPod, but again that's another step to take and my computer's kinda slow at doing those conversions. I'd rather just dump the FLAC data onto a device, plug it into my car stereo and listen on my commute. I guess I'm just lazy like that.

Just ordered a refurb H120 off eBay. Should be fun!

Nice.  Please report back and let us know what you think.

I'm basically in the same boat, I have a TON (600GB) of stuff in FLAC that I'd like to be able to just drop onto a player, but instead I have to go through the extra step of converting to MP3 (using db power amp) before dumping it onto the ipod.  That being said I pretty much only use the iPod when I'm out running, last year I trained for the NYC marathon, so it would have been convenient.  I don't see myself doing that again though.

fyi, i have a stack of used karmas and brand new 20 gb drives here.

great player if you ditch the stock buggy drive and replace with the newer gen drives.

I've been using mine (hacked out to 60gb) for years now

whoa, you have a 60gb in your karma?  Nice....I have a karma but the scroll wheel is busted and on occassion it turns into my power button. The battery drains pretty quickly too (6 hrs with mp3's). There are some bad sectors on the HDD as well.  I definitely need to replace it soon.  At least its lasted quite a while, 2 1/2 years and counting!

Rock Box the i-pod you already have and you can play flac files on it. Rock Box is great for music files (I can't figure out the radio/video for my Sansa) and allows you to play albums by folder if you like. You can still boot into the original i-pod firmware whenever you like.

Check out this link to be sure your i-pod accepts Rock Box:

Get one of the new 'iPod classic' models that have been anounced today, rockbox it, and job done.

160 gig!

 :o

Should keep you going for a while.

yeah, your battery is def. worse for wear, you should get 10-12 hours of mp3 playback on that.

Lemme know when you want to replace that drive

Nice!  I'll keep your offer in mind, because I definitely dont want to stop using the karma when the HDD goes.  I wonder if the battery can be replaced as well.
