I'm sure there must be a least a couple of people here who use Audition for multitrack recordings...

Does anyone know if there is a way to set Audition up so that the input and output devices are different devices? e.g. a modded UA-5 as the input and the computer's internal soundcard as the output?

I've been trawling the menus but there doesn't appear to be an obvious way of doing this.

Dunno how much it's changed since v1.5, but in v1.5 it's in Options | Device Properties.  There're Wave In and Wave Out tabs that allows the user to select different devices.  Pressing the Change button on these tabs also opens the Device Order window that allows one to select multiple devices for both playback and record, and specify the preferred order of usage.

You might also try Audition's Help file.  I've found Audition's Help file is really very good.  Good luck!

It needs to be done through your control panel.  The one thing I noticed was that if recording I MUST keep that window open or the recording stopped.  It will not run in background, at least on my machine, Kirk

Thanks for the pointers but I don't think I'm any nearer with this...

Brian, I don't seem to have a Device Properties option in any of the menus and the phrase doesn't come up when searching the Help file - I guess this is something that has been changed since v1.5.

Kirk - how do you do this through the Control Panel? I've gone to CP>Sound and disabled playback through the UA-5 and disabled recording through the internal sound (hoping to force the issue) but nothing seems to have changed.

The problem appears to be that when setting up the inputs/outputs one has to choose the driver first and only afterwards organize the ins and outs (ie via that particular driver) - there doesn't seem to be an option for having more than one driver (and therefore device) at once.

The Help file isn't much use on this topic, I'm afraid - I just keep getting pointed to the same page that explains how to select the driver for both inputs and outputs... No joy from Google yet either - but I've still got several thousand results to sift through 

I can't believe that multiple devices would be possible in earlier versions but not under later revisions - what can I be missing here?

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here - I've already got the UA-5 installed and working fine.

The Edit>Audio hardware Setup menu in Audition only seems to allow me to pick the same device for both input and output - what I'm trying to do is run two drivers simultaneously so that I can use the UA-5 for recording and a different device for playback.

there's no real need to hear playback at the same time. if you're trying to monitor it, your best bet is headphone into the ua-5.

Until it was set in the control panel I had the same problem.  Once you do it you can record into via UA-5 and have playback on your soundcard.

Can you tell me what option I'm looking for in Control Panel? I only seem to be able to enable/disable devices as documented above and there doesn't seem to be any reference to even this in the UA-5 manual...

Just had a thought, I'm not sure I've made it absolutely clear that I want to be able to use both devices simultaneously within Audition.

I told you to start on pg 35.   I'm sitting here with my manual in front of me on page 36 There are explicit instructions with pictures even.  Once I followed those instructions everything worked exactly as you want it to.   Everything is there including what to click on in control panel

I want to use Audition as a multitrack recorder - eg I want to be able to put down a track of guitar and then go back and add a track of bass. To do that I'll need to be able to hear the first track as I play which I can't do through the UA-5 as the mod that has been performed disables playback of PC audio.

I appreciate your help, but I don't think the UA-5 manual is going to help me here. The section you mentioned has no mention of the Control Panel for anything other than for Macs. There is an earlier section that is relevant to PCs but, as I mentioned above, I have already set-up the preferred input and output devices as this describes and I still get no audio through my PC speakers.

To be honest I'm not sure how the UA-5 manual would have instructions relevant to how Audition routes its output. As I see it, the problem is not one with the UA-5, it's a problem of getting Audition to route its output audio to something other than the UA-5.

ok, now i understand what you're after. i don't think it's possible to play back a track and record a separate one at the same time. maybe if you opened 2 instances of audition it might work? or used a stereo for the playback?
