PC dat drive setup

can someone walk me through what i've got to do to get my conner dds drive working for DAT transfers?  It's recognized in the device manager.  I need to update the firmware and then install one of the programs i think.  anything else i need to do?  

someone point me to the best resource or give me instructions for flashing the drive?  I've seen some conflicting ways of doing it.

if you haven't already bought dat2wav, PM me.  

this is the site that gives firmware flashing instructions and has fw to download:

IDing the drive in dat2wav is pretty painful, but i created a batch file that will try every possible combo. it's attached - once you have dat2wav installed you can run it.  

mitchell hibbs is the best person to ask detailed questions to, he walked me thru it... he is working on a GUI for dat2wav as we speak but it's got some bugs still.. have to ask him how it's going soon..

i have BAT files to transfer dats, play dats and rewind dats. Also, it seems like my drive rewinds dats when you press the eject button - i did not know it would do this and was thoroughly freaked the first couple times i tried to eject a tape

if you prefer to use VDAT, ask hibbs or stagger any ??s. i never got it working on my box (XP Pro)....

i forgot probably the most important thing. you must flash your firmware in TRUE DOS. not XP DOS mode, not win98 DOS mode, actual DOS. here is what mitch told me....


You need a *DOS* clean boot w/ NO
DRIVERS
except the drivers for the SCSI controller.

Goto...

And download the 'DrDOS 7.x Disk For BIOS Flashing Basic - No Drivers'

Then include the DOS SCSI driver for your controller on the disc and
reference
it in config.sys as...

Device = a:\yourdriver

Boot w/ this disc, then run the flash utility disc.



the attachment below is my scsi id script i mentioned in the post above. after you flash the firmware and install dat2wav, run it to ID your drive.

getting dat2wav is really frustrating. I have tried many things but I can't get it working. Everything seems to be set up right and just cant get the msdos to work with the drive. any tips?when I sue the script above it goes though until the end and then just stops. this sucks

Never tried dat2wav. I have been using vDAT for about a year now. It's twice as expensive as dat2wav, but the interface is clean and idiot-proof (the big reason I had to get it), and the results are the great.

yes I got the demo version and it seems to work way better and much easier. How much does it cost?

I had a few issues in getting it to work with WinXP Pro, but I have it running in Win2K compatability mode, and now it works fine.

damn I don't think I wont to spend that on a program. I have a digi soundcard and think I will just use that. I got the DAT drive for $40, but getting it working properly has been a pain in the ass...

stank try that batch file i attached, the main prob DAT2WAV has on most systems is recognizing the drive. if your firmware is flashed, and your drive is audio-capable, it should work with dat2wav. i wish i could get vdat working,,, but since i have bat files for everything i need to do i am happy with dat2wav.

i imagine if i hadn't been using DOS for 20 years getting vdat to work would be a bigger priority :) i'll try compatibility mode - see if that helps.

in the device manager it says the latest firmware is 5.ac. I don't think I flashed the drive yet. Does it sound like I need to do this even if I have the right firmware?

you do not need to flash it. it was flashed before you bought it. AC = audio capable

Wow, okay, welcome to seven years ago.

Does anyone have a copy of vdat anymore? I just lost a hard drive, and I'm pretty sure that vdat was on it.

I may or may not have a backup CD around here somewhere, but honestly, I have no idea.

Actually, scratch that. I found the one backup CDR that still had the program. Now it's just a matter of finding the right SCSI drivers to make my computer recognize the SCSI card to find the DDS drive. That should be the easy part, right?
