AT831 & Phantom Power
« on: July 02, 2004, 12:56:04 PM »
I'm using a Mackie 808M with Phantom power and plugged in my ATs...not getting a signal.  What could I be doing wrong?

Are they the sound pros 831s?  Terminated in a male mini plug?

Don't feed them 48v..good chance of frying them.  They would need to be moded(actual have the SP mod undone) to be able to use phantom power.

I've done the same thing with my 943s and have been very happy with it.  Seems to get a little cleaner sound.  If you put mini-xlrs on the mini-plug end, you can still use a bettey box for stealthing if need be.

only problem I have is that I have the croakie option, so about 1' away from the mics, the cables converge into one.  Hmmm..

You're gonna have to hack off the end if you want to use phantom.  I assume the cables are exactly the same as the regular 831s with the exception of the added croakie material over the top of that.

Jon do you have AT831's or 853's running off of phantom power?

I think most everyone will attest that there is a considerable improvement, verses the batt. box. With phantom I doubt you'd every really need to use the bass roll-off.

I recorded my first show with them Wednesday and I'm impressed with the sound.

Used to have

at853's to mod ad20

Liked the sound, but was missing a bit for me

Switched to at853rx with mp-2

Warm sound (prolly from the mp-2)  But sounds fuller to me, and quick transients are handled better imho...

the 853/mp2 combo is very nice.

i've heard a few 853 phantom ones and didn't hear that much difference to warrant me wanting to phantom mod the 831s i have from the SoundPros. i especially don't see any need since i use the akgs for non stealth gigs.
