i got a few splotches of digi-noise on a couple of recent masters, and it's the straw that broke the camel's back.  i want to ditch my 16-bit sony portables ASAP!

i'm on the list for a 722 (*and* 744, hee hee), but i'm also looking at the edirol r-1 for certain applications.  does anyone know of a vendor that's got them in-stock?  all of the usual suspects are out of stock.

i'm loving mine so far.  last night's van morrison master is totally perfect.  still would like to do a comprehensive a/b between the 16 bit modSBM and 24 bit r1 before i completely endorse, but... yeah, i'm pleased so far.

and yes, new guy, it records.

What I like about the R1: I'm up to almost 80 runs, it's a lot easier not to screw up with the R1 than with a DAT portable.  Way less hassle and faster transfer to CD via computer.  Certainly not inferior sound (I go line-in).  I just finished two recordings, one at 24 bits and one at 16 bits, of a loud classical concert, same program different nights, almost same seats.  Good levels so I didn't need to do much editing, and used Wavelab's UV dithering algorithm to put the 24 bit version into 16 bit wave files for CD.  I hear no difference, but will pass them on to my friend with high-end audio equipment this week. 

I think Sound Professionals got in a bunch of them last week, too.

What do you think are the main advantages the m-audio will offer over the R1 ... ??

Is there a way to mod one of these to take SPDIF IN??  I mean it has digi OUT.  Could the two be swapped somehow?
