JB3 optical input probs
« on: August 17, 2003, 04:42:51 AM »
i tryed to use my jb3 in the field for the first time today

running 391s > wmod ua5 > jb3

i started everything and it seemed to be going fine, but while recording, the time was jumping 2 seconds at a time, i thought maybe that was usual when recording 44.1KHz wav files since they are far superior to the mp3s, was just a thought at the moment

when i tryed to play it back, it was like it was in slow motion, like if i made it go 2 times faster it would be right

any ideas about this? i had to go analog line in to the jb3 all night, which wasnt a huge deal since there werent but 2 good bands out of 10, and il have plenty of oppourtunitys to tape them, as they are semi- local

any help is much appreciated

Cayman, are you sure you had your UA-5 set to the correct sample rate?  Ala you didn't have the UA-5 outputting 48k and the JB3 setup for 44.1 right?  The JB3 won't "autodetect" which your feeding it like a DAT will..

Why don't you post a little piece of your file to look at.  Sounds to me like your UA-5 was putting out 96k.  The weird time count happens to me when I feed the JB3 from the UA-5 in 96k mode.  Same with the 1/2 speed sounding playback.

Open up your file in your editor of choice and change the sample rate to 96k (in cool edit go edit, adjust sample rate, select 96k).   Does it sound normal now?
FWIW, the JB3 does record in 96k, it just writes a 48k header to the file - you are changing the header.  (What I don't know is how accurately the JB3 can record at this rate).

Any chance you powered the UA-5 up in 96k mode and THEN switched it to 44.1?  I think you have to power the UA-5 off for a change like that to take effect.  Make sure the 'ADV' switch on the UA-5 is off (though I'll confess I don't know if it plays a role in s/pdif output or if it's just the USB).

Also, you don't want to start monitoring on the JB3 if you're going to change the sample rate.  It stays locked on to whatever the initial sample rate was.  Get out and go back in to record monitor mode to reset.

It will auto detect 44.1 or 48 from the optical (at least under fw 1.32, could be different in 1.2)

Ya Lee, I get a prompt for 44.1 or 48k, haven't tried to trick it and send the wrong signal to detect it but I imagine that's a feature of the new firmware..

you know what, it was on 96k when i started it up, and i switched it to 44.1, and in the whole process with trying to identify the problem to correct it between bands i never powered the ua5 or the jb3 down

i bet you hit the nail on the head there man!

so your saying if i open the file up in cool edit and adjust the sample rate to 96k it will be ok? am i going to be able to resample it to 44.1 and be able to use the recording then?

the only band that messed up, was the only reason i did this whole thing, they are great friends from a few hours away, and they are a great band, and thier recording is the only one thats flubbed till now

i cant try the transfer/udjust sample rate till this afternoon when i pick up my firewire card for my pc. but il let everyone know whats up!

thanks to everyone!

Must be, mine only prompts for sample rate selection on analog in.

And the cool twist - you recorded the show at 96k sampling rate!  ;D

I've done a few tests but haven't figured out if the jb3 is reliable at that bitrate.  Be cool if there are no audible glitches in your show.  Glad it worked out.

as far as i can tell, no big glitches, seems to be some audible clicks, small but they are there, might just be my pc playback, il burn and give it a listen on my home stereo tomorrow

everything else was 44.1 analog in- sbd/aud mix and it sounds incredible!

Cat, Jump

a rock/jam style band from st louis. they are great, with a front man that can sing/ play lead guitar/ and play harmonica like john popper

i know these guys really good, and are just great guys

i dont believe recording in 96k was a good idea, sounds like a few audibe pops and stuff, nothign major, but i can hear them, maybe it wont be like that on my playback system, who know, ahvent listened yet

So, I had this happen to me at last nights Ryan Adams DC show. Changed to 96k in Wavelab and It saved the recording (had the damn ADV button on from a previous lappie recording). But something else strange happened. The unit was off at the end of the show. I got almost the whole "2nd set", but it cut off maybe aboiut 10 - 15mins prior to the end. THe batteries have plenty of juice. Overheating maybe? Neve had that before, and the JB3 was in open air, sitting on top of a towel that was covering the UA-5. Any thoughts?
