Title: Attaching T-Bars to light stands
Post by: Tall Adam on June 04, 2004, 01:18:50 AM
so i recently got my stand for my new rig and to my newbie dismay, found that of course, the 1/4 inch stud on it will not accomdate the 5/8 threads required to hold a t-bar. My first reaction was to go on micsupply.com and order the adapter sold there to convert old manfrotto stands into mic stands. immediately after doing so though, i realized why not just solve this one myself?

the solution: i went to home depot and with 1 washer and 1 1/4in nut I was able to firmly (and permanantly) attach my t-bar to my stand. granted this only works with t-bars which have a hole in the middle (like the one available at most guitar centers when you remove the middle thread (On-Stage Stand Stereo Mic Bar)).

the cost for this? $1 instead of $21 for an adapter and shipping.

just thought id get this out there incase any newbies encounter the same problem i ran into, and to save them money.

you could have also probably found that adapter (1/4 > 5/8) at home depot also :)

the 5/8 is weird tho, only the 5/8-27 fit well

I would be impressed if anyone found a 1/4 > 5/8 adapter at Home Depot. I have tried every hardware store in the yellow pages and this is just not an item they carry. It turns out that not many bolts or plumbing parts use a 5/8 X 27 thread.

5/8-27 is a fine thread or machine thread, so home improvement stores don't carry it since it's not construction releated.  You won't find taps of that size either unless you go to a specialty store, machine shop, etc.  The above idea will work fine as long as it doesn't "swivel" on you.  If it does, turn your extensions on the stand.

nah the swivel factor is almost nil, i screwed the nut on with a ratchet and its damn tight. this has its ups and downs: good, its always gonna be parallel with the ground and its more stable than just the mic stand adapter. bad, its on there for good for the most part and adding the t-bar to the light stand slightly increases my chance for stand noise but i dont think either are really problems

stand noise?

use shockmounts for the mics and you will eliminate that...

Advice I got in another thread was to check your local camera store - not Ritz Photo or national chains, but a local place. They had a whole drawer full of stuff they let me paw through until I found what I was looking for!

When i lost mine i needed one the next day and didn't have time to get a shipment in from b&h so i went to guitar center and they had a couple in the pro audio section in a cup w/ pens and rubberbands and stuff.  Gave the guy a cig for it.

B&H has both the 1/4-20 > 3/8 and 3/8 > 5/8-27 adapters though one is very hard to find on their site.

B&H's part numbers and description:
BO3103 - 1/4-20 > 3/8
Bogen 1/4-20 to Euro Thread Adapter  $3.95

BOMIBA - 3/8 > 5/8-27
Bogen 3/8 F Euro to 5/8 M Mic. Thread Adapter  $4.95

yeah man, i found a whole page of those adapters on the B&H site.  any eurpean mics will already come with 3/8 -> 5/8's adapters with the mic clamps.  i thought those bogen stands with 1/4 threads all came with a little silver threaded adapter on it already. very tiny tho. easy to lose. here is the bogen one i got from B&H for a few bucks. i like it cause its got a lil pad on the top and its hard to lose. unlike the one in the other picture that came on the bogen stand when i bought it.
