I got a pair of AT853s in the YS and the bodies have some kind of rubbery coating or housing over them (see pictures below). I'd like to know if I can safely remove that rubbery coating, but I'm not sure who to ask. Anyone know what's up with these things?

Never seen that nonsense. Looks like someone put that on there so they could attach clips?

Yeah, the clips attach to those little circle areas.

Hoping someone else chimes in here, but I see so reason why you couldn't remove it. On the other hand, it's not going to make them much smaller by doing so

I would ask sound professionals they may have offered that at one time or may know more.

I'd be careful removing them, the plastic body covers are very thin. I'd be tempted to keep them, but it looks like they would interfere with my screens and all my clips but a shock mount I have. Not sure if that would be a problem with you or not. The increased diameter would help in small diameter shock mounts.

If anyone's curious, or just for posterity, I got the coating off these pretty easily. It just took some careful use of an exacto knife. Once I got a corner up, and scored a line across the rest, it peeled off without leaving any marks or residue.

Nice! Brave, I would have assumed they were glued or at least the rubber adhered to the body over time..

I wonder where that originally came from? Did not look like some cobbled up half ass job.

The guy I bought them from thought they came from Church Audio, but I sent those pictures to Chris Church and he said they weren't his work.

Pretty sure they were a SoundPros thing, maybe 10+ years ago.

Yes, Sound Professionals - and they came with really tiny clips that push fit into the holes.
Over time, they wear, and are prone to not staying where you put them. Cutting them off isn't a bad idea at all.
