Why are many power cables made with 4 pin xlr's? Could you use a three pin xlr? They sell the three pin connectors at my local music store. I would rather not order them if there is no need.

Yet, so many folks use the 4-pins that for that one time you are at a show in the OTS and your battery dies, do you really think that the spare the guy behind you has is a 4-pin or a molex?
I'd go with what has become the standard.
i'm not disagreeing with you, but speaking from personal experience, i don't think anyone will have a spare 24v system if i ever ran out of juice for my pre.
from looks of it, majority of folks here use their own DIY setups with all kinds of pin assignments, although a standard is in place. just think of all the different voltage sources that are out there now: 4.5v, 5v, 6v, 7.2v, 9.2v, 12v, etc. etc.
i'll stick to my own design because it works best for me.
