Lip of Stage split omni's
« on: September 16, 2004, 10:01:49 PM »
Taping 4 bands tomorrow. Time for the yearly Rochester Groove Fest....this one takes place on a boat and I should be able to tape from where ever...thinking setting up split omni's along the stage lip...what would be a good distance?

Depends on the stage set up. I'd at least spread them as wide as the drum kit (if it is center stage)

I've spread as wide as 8 or 9 feet stage lip (JMP@Ryles) and had good results. ymmv.

a couple weeks ago, i ran split omni's at DQG (David Grisman Quintet) at the Denver botanic gardens.
id say i was no more than 10 ft back and got great sound.

due to the set up, i was just outside the tent covering the stage, on which speakers are hung,
i was able to pick up sound from the amps on stage as well as the PA dropping down from above on the tent.

omni's rock.

Ran my mics about 4feet high, split about 3 feet right in front of the band. Real small area so it covered nicely, no PA, just the bands monitors, etc....made a great tape, nice mix of amplified and raw music, and yes, I love omni's...especially when doing 24bit
