Another (possibly silly) KM140/active cable question...
« on: June 18, 2004, 08:57:01 PM »
Something I've been wondering with active cable setups, would it be possible to skip XLRs altogether and just plug the mic bodies into whatever pre you were running?

Not sure what the repurcussions would be, and no, I'm not planning on trying it until I find out for sure.

I'd imagine it's either a HUGE no no, or it'd be perfectly fine.

nick;

i've no direct experience with them, but i've seen many tapers plugging the KM100s directly into their pre's.

sorry, didnt see this till now.  this is a problem with the km100 series.  the problem isnt that it wont fit, but that you have to force it to fit.  you will scratch the hell out of your 100 bodies, but it wont damage them other than cosmetically.  the problem is that the diameter of that ring around the 3 pins is just a touch too big.  normally what i used to do would be to throw some .5m rt angle male xlr > female xlr and plug into that female end.

throw some shorty xlr's between the body and the preamp, it will keep any stress off of your mic bodies if the bag tips or gets jostled around...

keeping the mic bodies in the pelican case is the way to go, it'll help protect the mics in the event that some jackass spills their pina colada in your bag.

I did it for years, sometimes straight into a DAP1 other times into a V2.  I never had any problems, except the logistics of having those bodies stick out so far.

I did it too into a UA-5. It fit perfectly.

The KM100's lock into the Mp2.
