Dual-Boot on my home pc?
« on: March 31, 2004, 09:58:23 PM »
i am in need of something else besides xp pro to do some stuff, well actually my significant other is who needs an older OS to do stuff (ie a graphics design tablet that isnt compatible with xp)

i would like to have a dual boot with win2kpro

how would i go about getting this started, i have never had, done dual boot before. is there and FAQ's i could read or any pages with some instructions?

Thanks
Dustin

dustin;

i used to have W98 and W2kPro dual boot on my computer.  i'm not sure about XP, but you -may- have to had W2k installed first and THEN have XP installed.

like i said, i'm not sure about XP/W2k compatibility.

but, if there aren't any issues, you could just freshly install W2k.  upon bootup, your computer will prompt which OS to bootup.

hope that helps,
marc

so, when i try to do a 2k install it tells me that the OS install program is for an older version of windows and that it will disable the install process of the disc

do i need to do a clean install of win2kpro, then install xp

i know alot of guys are doing dual boot with xp and 2kpro on thier laptops these days

sounds like it. i installed W98 first then W2k on top of that.

so i just install one OS, then do a install of the other one, and then it will prompt me at startup which to use? is it that simple?

dual OS installation was simple, BUT you'll need to configure drivers for both OS (sound card, video card, etc.).

it's been a long time since i got rid of W98 from my system, but installation wasn't so difficult.

when i had the dual boot, the initial bootup prompted me to choose the OS to load.  then it would load the window upon my choice.

im back, with a fully configured dual boot machine with windows 2000pro and windows xp pro

i wanted to be sure i was doing everything right and did a google search for "dual boot operating system installation" and the first match was a microsoft page that was great

had specific notes for dual boot with xp and 2k

the one part i didnt know before i read that page was adding the extra partition and installing win2k-pro onto it, then installing xp on the other partition
