M-audio f410 users please read

Placing this here too as well as the Open Forum in hopes that the right person will see this:

OK, first swing last night to run 24/96 using my new f410.

I ran skm140's>V3 24/96 on s/pdif> f410>Wavelab/Vaio and ran into a few problems.

The first problem was that I got to the venue plugged everything in and for some reason the f410 drivers were not running right.  Wavelab DID NOT have the 410 in the pull down menu to choose for a recording card and after a couple of reboots I quickly came to realize that I needed to try to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them on the spot.  I didnt have any problems like this in a test run at home and am a little confused why this might happen now.  Hopefully it won't reoccur.

So, I got the drivers re-installed and a signal to run and it looked like everything was kool locking into my external signal at that bit depth and sample rate.  (with a DAT running on the analog outs as back up....thank goodness!)

Well, I get home and both sets are full of crackly noise.  Not intermittent, but continuous crackling.

I will run some more tests here at home and try to begin setting some presets so that I can just go and click a few buttons to expedite set-up, but does anyone know why this might have happened?

I also have a couple other questions about options with the f410, like ASIO monitoring, so if any of you that have successfully run a f410 for a bit could PM me privately that'd be great.

Here's to trial and error, but I'd rather have it be trial and success...Kk

I've been running mine for about 5-6 months now, with very few problems (other than some issues with the latest OS X driver).  I've never experienced a "crackly" noise in my recordings.

If you want any details you can PM me, but I hear it's a whole different world running it on the PC side.

I run the FW410 on Win2000 and I haven't had any problems with constant static -- I have actually experienced a similar problem with getting the driver to load...but a restart usually fixes that problem...you may want to to try using both ASIO and WDM drivers...let me know if you have any other question i may be able to help with....BTW, I record to Samplitude 7...

I have had some issues taking s/pdif in...but nothing like the ones you've described...the problem that i have had invovles my OS freezing up when i power up my ADC after I power up the FW410 and have samplitude readsy to record...but once everything locks up, a trouble free digital input...as far as the V3...I've only taken a digi out of a V3 once with out trouble....

hope you figure it out b/c i have very much enjoyed my FW410 to this point

I also have some Nickel Creek that I'm gonna offer up soon.  Those are my 3 favorite tapes I've made so far.  On Friday I'll be running it with the audix mics, I'll post results here as well.

I just sent this in a PM...but i might as well post it here i case it will help anyone else:

Yea...i took me a little while to get a hang of the virtual control panel...the weird thing about is that you can control it both from samplitude (in my case) and from the virtual panel...as far as just plugging mics straight in an using it for phantom/pre/ad...its is quite simple...just make sure you have phantom on..and the two mic/line input selectors in the out position (mic)...then it should just be a matter of dialing up the gain and selecting M-Audio FW (1+2) in the appropriate input select in wavelab (im not sure exactly how this works in wavelab...but in samplitude it gives you a bunch of choices, inclding M-Audio FW (3+4), in samplitude (3+4) is the stereo digital input)

As far as multi-track input...ive had success pulling two analog channels in(soundboard) as well as two digital channels in (from outboard a/d)...then laying down all 4 tracks to samplitude and doing a post-matrix...the one tricky thing with this is the clock source...when taking a digital input, you need to select the appropriate input (optical or rca) in the hardware tab of the virtual mixer, as well as selecting external for the sync source...with this setup, the a/d will use the clock from whatever digital source you are sending into the FW410...when you are just using the analog inputs, be sure to change the sync source to internal (this may be the cause of the static)...hope this helps, and feel free to let me know if you have any more questions...
