Title: Best CDR
Post by: charles on January 23, 2005, 02:43:45 PM
Been shopping around for misc. items and started looking at CDRs. And I thought I'd ask everyone here what CDRs they use. Considering they can be purchased from very cheap to rather expensive....I was curious as to how much better these more expensive CDRs are and if they're worth the money.....even if they're just used for masters.

I'll second the TY's

So, it really does make that big of a difference? I'm ashamed to say it, but I've never in my life used a high end cdr. Always the inexpensive ones.
Title: Re: Best CDR
Post by: Swampy on January 23, 2005, 03:00:14 PM
I think the differnce is durability. The cheap ones will probably not work/have the coating chip off ect... long before the tys... Its not like they sound different or anything, but longevity.

Ah...longevity. That's certainly important.

I use the white-face Taiyo Yudens.  IME the silver faces on every other brand I've used flakes off eventually.  The white-face, or other printable surface discs, seem more durable so far.

I opted for the white faced printable TY's because to me, it seems like the silver faced would get scratched easier. The TY's are definetly a lot better quality than anything else.

Cascade Media has a good price on hundred spindle.

going against the grain here.
I like verbatims.
They use the same dye in them as medical grade archival media. (from my understanding)
Can't say I have lost one yet in the last 8 years +

Actually the TY's are inexpencive.  Arund my house the retail chains only carry the generics or the pale ink taiwanese discs witht he big name labels (sony fuji) and they charge top dollar for 50, so I figure i'l get thew TY's that are more reasonable.

The best of the best are gold on gold discs Mam-a Discs.
$109 for 100 discs (http://www.inkjetart.com/mitsui/")
more info here (and in the above price link): http://www.mitsuicdr.com/products/gold/archive.htm

Accelerated aging tests show that MAM Gold can be used as a reliable storage media for more than 300 years.

TY just came out with a Cynanie version II dye in Japan: the That's Special Edition Gold Disc which I'm guessing is supposed to be comparable to the Mam-a Gold discs.

those be some bitchin-ass cd-rs. if i hadn't landed 50 packs of TY fujis for $9.99 at rite aid a few months ago, i'd be buyin these again. :)

I use TDK discs. Haven't had a problem with them. Spindle of 100 is $25 at costco.

TY's are great. The problem with Name brands is they change there supplier's from time to time. Many Big brands have changed from Japanese to Tawainese which is a big step down. Many big name brands would us TY but now dont. The TY's have frosted center wich makes them easy to recognize. Pro disk are also good but I dont think Mitsui are worth the big bucks. I order for www.am-dig.com because they have great service to tapers and the frequent many jamband boards. Be careful and dont get the TY disk that are unlabeled unless you plan on labeling them yourself or having them silk screened. They are much cheaper but will scratch very easily with protection. I and many others have made this mistake.

I think the TY golds are the shizzle, a little pricey but really nice thick top coat that seems very durable and flake-resistant.

for archival purposes, you might want to check out this....im not sure, it MAY be overkill for music cd's, but IF you want it to last a LOONG time..def worth it from what i have read here and other places....I wonder when they will put this coat on dvds....that would be the optimal archival media for my purposes.  unless the blue lazer(or whatever it is) has this kind of coat..

Great discussion board to find deals and tons of knowledge on disk and burners can be found at www.cdrlabs.com

I may be totally off base but Verbatim in the past where made in Japan but that isn' the case anymore.

actually as I understand it the fujis made in japan are rebranded TY's...eventually that inventory will run out though...I am starting to see the local spots fuji spindles all with a new font on their packaging, and they are made in taiwan....

TDKs in the new batches I have seen have been made in India...

I was getting the silver 100/$25 but I just picked up the whiteface 100/$32.I agree with some of the others that maybe the silver would maybe scratch easier. And they look purty, too. ;D

I had heard Ty's were one of the better one's but around here all the Fujis' I could find were made in Taiwan. This is according to the site that I buy mine from
"Fuji America has switched CD-R manufacturers, so Taiyo Yuden is no longer making them. Media Supply is letting traders know that Taiyo Yuden is still Available, at very aggressive prices. We are the largest blank CD-R distributor in the USA, and a very large percentage of the CD-Rs we sell are Taiyo Yuden."

Not sure how true it is.

with the advent of LAMA, BT etc I'm just not that concerned about my archive of shns/flacs etc. All of my masters that I really care about are out there in circulation. If I have a CD crap out on me I'm sure I can find a replacement without too much trouble.

i'm all about storing on HD's ;)

I eventually want to build an HD "caddy".  it will basically be tower of firewire HD's all daisy chained together and hot-swappable 8)

edit: DVDR's are a possibility now that i'm getting a G4 PB.  May have to look into that for my better recordings as backups.

from what I hear, the new Klone cd-r's at am-dig are TY made...much better top coat than that silver flaky crap they put on their own discs as well...I'm going to look into those because I hate the coating on TY's and have no intention of paying for printable discs...

yes they are Heath...If your sw can tell the diff...put one in and you will see it is true. And the coating is the add-on that "makes them  better" than the TY's.

ahhhhh yes, I guess I should have clarified.........

I'm aware that HD's crash as well.  And certainly before a CD technically should.  With all the work I do, in addition to collecting, I have more recordings filling up space than I can burn to archive CD's.  Having HD's will allow me additional space to store off of my work computer(s) and then when I have the time, I can archive to CDR/DVDR for a more permanant storage.

i now archive everything on dvd-r and i'm not too worried about cdrs much anymore and just buy whatever is on sale when i need them.

as for cdrs, keep in mind that some of it also in how you take care of them.  if you're throwing your discs around, not keeping them in cases, etc then you're gonna have more problems then a disc that is properly cared for.  all of my important discs go into jewel cases and stay there.  i've also read that writing on your discs with a sharpie isn't good for them either.  and sticky notes are even worse.  things to keep in mind as well.

Title: Re: Best CDR

actually, not really.  i keep those in a cd booklet in a cool dry place and only take them out when they're needed, since i keep a lot of the shows backed up on my puter anyway, which i stream from thru my stereo via my xbox.

from everything that i've read about dvdr media, it goes through more testing than normal cdrs.  most companies making cdrs don't have to put the cdr media through a lot of testing, and therefor don't.  on the other hand, all dvdr media has to undergo the same rigourous testing and from what i've read, dvdr media is a lot more rugged than cdr media.

i wish i knew where i heard that, i'm guessing it was on dat-heads at one point or one of the other yahoo taper groups that i'm on.  plus, i'm with tim on this one, almost everything i tape is well circulated...and just about everything i download is also well circulated.  the more copies out there the better.  if something ever goes drastically wrong, i'm sure i can find the stuff that i want.
