Title: have cards. what else?
Post by: scb on October 05, 2005, 10:27:02 AM
Zee's post in the loaner forum got me thinking i'd ask the question here

if you already had a set of cards, and wanted a second set of mic/capss, which would you get?  omnis or sub cards, and why?

(assuming you don't want hypers...looking for something more open, not more directional)

hah, well yeah.  but dpa's figure 8 is known only to dpa. we'll see it someday, but not anytime soon.  i wish they'd just get one out there :)

(and this thread isn't ncessarily about me and getting new mics or anything, i'm just curious about people's thoughts on this.  )

For my purposes, I went with subcards instead of omnis.  IME, even the minimal rejection offered by the subcards makes a substantial difference in helping remove some of the audience noise from the recording, while still providing a very open, natural sound.  Omnis sound a bit more open and natural, but not so much so that I wanted to give up the slight rejection offered by the subcards.  I mainly run my subcards NOS, but have considered running split subcards in the AUD or on-stage, like one would do with omnis.  Haven't done it yet, but I will one of these days.

the rejection of the subcards offer is nice... however, if you want dramatic change b/w the cards and the other mic, i would recommend the omnis... beside, you get the pleasure of constructing a jdisc... what could be more fun?  ;D

seriously though, i think omnis would have more to offer for a wider range of situations.
