I am looking to get a taping rig and have been struggling with which mics to get. I have a recording of a show with AKGs 681's that sounds great. But I can't find any info on them anywhere except that they are an older model. So a friend told me that the AKG 480's have a great sound too.
Any info on these mics and which would be a better choice for concert recording would be helpful. I am looking to run a DAP1 too.

My guess is that that was a type, and the mics you heard WERE 481's. I think this came up a ciouple weeks ago as well.

i might disagree, i think theyre 461's....especially since where most of these sources are from ive been there, and d00d runs 461's>mp-2>snm-1>sony, but i dunno, what does that mean, maybe 461's, w/ modded bodies, or ,maybe 61 caps on a 480???i dunno, but i know the guy where most of these sources are coming from, and he runs 460's....

From the tapes I've heard with these mics vs. others, I'd go with others. Not that the AKG C1000S are bad (first mics I owned actually), just that others in the price range sound better (to me).

I've got a 12" flexible t-bar from Sound Pros that works great. There is also a 6" and a 24" model - depends on what configurations you want to run.

You can still get big sound from small mics.

at several shows, i have seen rigs with nerf footballs on the top of stand, with small mics attatched. i believe these are binaural mics, and the nerf recreates the head shape? does anyone have any insight on this for me, and an evaluation of the effectiveness. thanks.

not sure. i recall yellow. i have seen two of these rigs, one in seattle at dave matthews at victor steinbrueck park, and one in pullman at WSU at howie day.

i was commenting on the fact that there are no such things as "binaural" mics, as binaural is a technique using omni mics...
and anyone who uses a gatdamn nerf football as a head baffle is a pussy! nerf probably isn't dense enough anyway. i use my own noggin - nothin gets more real than that!

Just have to chime in here... I love my C1000s. I sort of defaulted into them since I already owned a pair which I was using as drum overheads in my PA rig.

There are a number of reasons C1000s make great starter mics:

1. They're nearly indestructable and are built like tanks -- which means you can get them from pretty much anywhere. Many other inexpensive mics (like the Oktavas) have very poor build quality and quality control, which means you have to get them from a supplier who picks through the trash to get you something decent. They charge for this.

2. They come with hypercardoid adapters -- which means you get two patterns to play with from the start.

3. The capsules are internally shockmounted -- which means you save $100+ on shockmounts.

4. They take 9v batteries internally -- which means you save $50-$100+ on a battery-powered phantom power supply, and...

5. Everyone knows about #1 above, so you can probably use them for a year or two then sell them for darn near what you paid for them when you're ready to upgrade.

That said, there are lots of people who hate C1000s and love other things, and you might be one of them.

If you're interested, I'd be willing to B&P my Galactic 10/30/2003 (Austin, TX) which I recorded with my C1000s > PB224 > AD-20 > NJB3 so you can get a listen.

You have to have 50 posts before you are able to give and take tix. As for the c1000's. Great starter mic as mentioned above. Bass responce lacks but usefullness and a low price make up for that. My friend has taped a ton of shows with those. If your in a good room in a good spot you get good tapes

for the AT831s:

what kind of battery box is needed?
i've been looking at the SP-SPSB-1 and SP-SPSB-6. i can't really tell the difference between the two... besides size?

i know i should get the levels adjustment opinion for these because my Sony MD can't adjust levels on the fly. should i get the bass roll-off opinion as well?

could i get a battery box without level adjustments and just use the SP-ATEN-1 attenuator cable to adjust levels?

I would get the level controls & the Bass roll option for sure.

Not sure what the difference in the 2 boxes are. When I looked at them a long time ago it seemed like size was the only diff.

Get the longer cord option on the box as well
