Title: VHS > PC: Best tools
Post by: Popmarter on June 24, 2019, 07:52:04 AM
Quick question, looking for tools to buy.

What do I need to transfer VHS tapes to pc.

Just excellent quality - easy to use. Just transfer. I figure there is a lot you can do in postproduction, but there is no real need too. Budget 100 euro's?

VCR > device digitizing analog video > PC with video capture software > hard disk (roughly 13GBs per hour of digitized video) > program to encode video to viewable format

I bought an ION Video to SD recently to transfer some old VHS tapes. It records directly to SD card; only a single choice on codec and resolution. It's a good quick and dirty option: simple to use and well within your budget.

requires FireWire which I don't know anyone who has it now.
Try this for USB http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/prods.htm

A Firewire card is fairly cheap - $14.99 on Amazon and that comes with a Firewire cable.  If it were an either/or works the same situation, I'd say just go with the USB.  But USB can be really problematic - whereas Firewire works really well.
