PIP - Plug in power question
« on: June 24, 2010, 09:16:48 AM »
Is leaving PIP on and using mics that have internal batteries safe?  Thinking of running this pre: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-PREAMP behind my Nak 700's which run on internal 6V batteries. This pre always has "PIP" on. Can this cause any issues? The pre manufacturer has made this statement:

>> Generally, the power supply circuit in a powered microphone will block
>> any power coming from an external source as long as the manufacturer
>> documentation does not specifically tell you *not* to plug it into a
>> powered mic input, you would be OK.

My 700 docs don't say anything about *not* plugging into devices with PIP. Just looking for more input before trying this pre. Thanks.

To be safe, the microphone would have to have a blocking capacitor to prevent the PIP getting through.

I would check on this before using.

If your recording device's mic input has an mic power OFF choice, turn it OFF.
Having PIP turned on seems to always increase the deck's input noise and increase the loading of the connected mic.

So if not needing the deck's powering feature, while unlikely to cause harm to your mic, don't use it for self powered or dynamic mics if at all possible.
