not familiar w/these speakers.  same time frame as the 901, I assume.  they look similar style wise.

any way...., I came across a pair at a local pawn shop for $175.  I'm certain I could get them for $100-125.
they look to be in good shape.  wood rails are nice, no rips in the fabric.  cones look good.

i'm not a bose fan, but i know the older stuff is pretty decent.  i was thinking a nice 2nd system in my workshop or something.
FWIW, these are the old 1980s 601 series II.

IMHO, it not worth the "driect/reflecting" muck. I'd rather use something like this for a bare-bones, non-critical listening rig:

just didn't know if these were "all that".  I know they are sort of a collectors Bose though, after a little research.  They seem to go for around $450 restored, or in mint condition.  so, $175 seems...good!

nick, I would rate them as a solid product.  Not quite the umph of 901's but still pretty nice speaker.  $175 might be a bit large, but if you could talk them down they might be worth it.  And the direct reflecting idea really needs to be adhered to, they must be hung about 18 inches from every surface-top, side, bottom, rear.  I used to have my 301's hung exactly as they recommend in the living room of a standard southern style open plan house.  The sound filled up the entire house with crisp, non bass thumpy music.

the 301's were quite a bit smaller.  I wanted to speak up in favor of Bose, not neccesarily the 601, before thinking if I had ever seen anything other than the 301 or 901.

So in this case, you have to set them up standing 18 inches from each surface other than the floor. so just the 2 walls.  The basic point that most people can't deal with aesthetically is that they are not supposed to be pushed in to the corners.

I am on a no spend budget, plus live in a house the size of a large sears shed, so those won't work for my current listening situation.

Good luck with them.  I have been reading about your mono block exploits and am sure you will be very happy.  My friend Eddie turned me on to the "magic" of small block tube amplification in the late 90's.  HE owns and built cabinets for 1940's manufactured TAnnoy reds with his mono blocks.

We have a pair of 1975 Bose 601 s1 - they need a bit of work. A few of the tweeters are shot and the rubber surrounds on the cones are dry rotted - rehab must happen. FWIW, I am not the biggest fan of the Bose sound, but these old speakers that need some rehab sound surprisingly decent. There a a shitload of transducers in those boxes and they are known to fail (or dry rot, etc...). Pull off the grills and take a good look. Will probably be a project but should be fun and if the costs aren't too high, might as well. But then I dig vintage gear. Got a few old tt's and a Tascam two channel r2r and a Otari 4 channel r2r that is badass -lots of work to be done. 

Go for it, have fun - and argue that price down a bit.....
