I don't have the cx900 but it appears that your cx520 lens is 5.5mm to 66.0 and adding your 1.7 extender gets you out to 112.2mm.
The cx900 is also 12x but starts at 9.3 and goes to 111.6mm virtually the same range you were getting on the cx520 with the 1.7 tele extender.
Also the cx900 has a 24x smart zoom getting you out to 223.2mm and also finally has the digital zoom(i know everyone is afraid of the digital extender).
So although 2 cameras are 12x zoom they are not equal as this shows.
Hi beatkilla,
Thank you for your reply. I am wanting to understand your explanation but I'm not sure I'm following due to my less-than-well-versed knowledge of optics. I understand you are referring to focal lengths. When you say the cx900 fully zoomed in has virtually the same range as the cx520 with the 1.7x extender (because the focal lengths are the same), are you saying the images I see in the viewfinder (and the final uncropped images) will be the same? i.e. that there is no need to use an extender with the cx900 if I'm happy with the "zoom" I'm getting now with the cx520?
The way I'm processing this, is that if both cameras (with no tele extenders) are zoomed out to infinity the image seen in the cx900 will appear "closer." So if they are both fully zoomed in at 12x the cx900 image will also still appear closer even though the total magnification will be the same.
Am I understanding this correctly? If I am then my problem is solved--no big-ass non-stealthy tele.
Also, I'm hazy about the Smart Zoom. Sony seems to be saying that that is NOT digital zoom so the image won't be degraded. Is that accurate? If it is I'll be even happier.
