YSD-998 12v/9v/5v Li-ion "Hoo boy" battery from HK
« on: October 15, 2011, 04:55:12 PM »
I saw mention of these batteries in one of these threads and decided $38.00 wasn't too huge of a roll of the dice.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5V-9V-12V-DC-Rechargeable-Li-ion-battery-CCTV-ep-/320733873198?pt=US_Batteries&hash=item4aad3a842e

Shipping took about two weeks from Hong Kong.  The battery arrived with a 12v wall-wart charger (with super short cable) and plugs and cables for 5v USB, 9v and 12v.  None of the supplied tips fit anything I have.  The included 9v cable has a tip that's way too long for the depth of the 9v receptacle and it was also jiggly.  I wanted to see if I could run my pre on this.  Others have found that the supplied 12v cable fits a DR-680.  It has an on/off power switch - that could be a good thing or a bad thing.

I think at least one person has mentioned that they received a battery like this or similar that was DOA and someone else had one balloon up during charging, which can't be good.  They are cheap, and you might be taking your chances a little with these batteries until there's more feedback on them.

TGakidis had made me a 5v USB power cable for my Edirol R-09HR.  The deck runs fine on the 5v USB outlet.

Then I went to Radio Shack for Adapta-plugs.

12v outlet = Adapt-a-plug tip K
9v outlet = Adapt-a-plug tip H

I ran my Wendt X-2 just fine on the 9v outlet, so given the 9v capacity of 8500mah this looks like it has more juice than my Initial RB270 DVD batteries (at 5400mah) and its smaller and lighter.  This battery could be a fine replacement for those batteries eventually (fingers crossed), but it has no LED meter and who knows whether the built-in electronics will prove reliable.

The whole kit:

The top:

I dug the goo out of the holes covering the screws and took it apart.  Inside are 3 Li-ion cells and the tiny circuit board (pizza crumbs for scale ;-) ):

Thanks for sharing Bevin.  Can you shoot a picture next to a DVD battery for a size comp?

With a DVD battery:

Just a little wider, but all other dimensions are smaller than a DVD batt:

I have the same battery  and a buddy does too.  There are some noise to the battery circuit that the DVD batteries do not have....BUT..the noise is so low it is under the self noise of mics.  There is a screen shot somewhere here on TS, I'll post a link when I find it.  My buddy argues that any noise is bad but I don't think it really matters.  I guess in theory if we are going to the trouble of using silver cable and high end gear then any noise is bad.  Can you hear it???....well no, but a little noise here, a little noise there and it could all add up to something.  I use mine to power a USBPre2, so I cannot comment on the use for other voltages

Power supply noise is the devil and you should take it extremely seriously. It can get a lot worse when the battery is in very close proximity to the signal path. I've had a common DVD battery inject terrible noise into the PSP-2 running directly next to each other. At least... i'm pretty damn sure that was the root cause.

I can relate to your concern about RFI noise but....at least as far as I know......This is just something that is only visible as extremely low noise measurements not as something you can hear on a recording.  Like I said, the noise is lower than a microphone's self noise.  I have not experienced and battery noise from my DVD or the battery while using a BMp2+, V2, V3, SD MP-2 or USBPre2.  I will somtimes have the preamps directly on top of the battery or the deck (DR-680) on top of the batteries.  Does not really help you if you ARE getting noise from a battery 8)

I also have some links for meters but since it's a meter for a set voltage I never followed up on it.  The only other drawback I don't like is the long charge time.

i use one and its works fine.  no noise at all.  i only use the 12v out so cant say anything about the 9v and 5v outs.  super small and light.  u need to turn it on to charge it.  wierd, but has to be done.  i thought mine was DOA because i charged it all nite then went to test it and it lasted only 10 min.  turned it on and charged it and all good.  just use it once or twice to get it ready and it got better run times after " breaking " it in.  will deff get another.  it about the size of a pack of smokes.   ed

So, is it using three 3.7v (iRiver type batteries) batteries in series to generate the ~12v (11.1v)? Or is there a step up circuit that raises the voltage to 12v?

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

Thanks for posting about this, beeco.  Definitely a neat little power supply provided it doesn't fail when you need it most. :)  Having a power switch and the lack of a remaining juice meter is kind of a headscratcher, but so it goes.  Whoever's running one of these, please keep us posted about on-going performance.  Thanks.

I got one of these the other day. No manual, no instructions. I had already ordered adapters for the gear I needed it for- http://www.ebay.com/itm/160666650148
Until I read this thread I was not aware it needed to be on to charge. I could see there was a green light on power supply and on box. Charging now, and based on pics shown here it looks like light on box turns green when charged. Thx again-

UPDATE....about 6 months ago mine just died while using it and stayed dead.  won't charge or provide any power.  I think for a little over a year with less than 2 dozen runs on it that is shitty quality.  Based on this and the various pitfalls it has(exposed switch, no meter, long charge time) I would never buy another one.

Mine swelled up and died after a year or so.  I definitely wouldn't buy another one, either.

I'm really happy, however, with my naztech pb18000 clone.  No troubles at all ....
