Title: UA-5- 4 Channel Possibility
Post by: BodhiTaper on May 15, 2009, 05:42:35 PM
I was told one time that you could do a 4 Channel with the UA-5 by using the 2 XLRs and the 2 RCA inputs. Is this possible, and if so, how do you configure the unit to get both? Can you set levels for the RCAs?

Thanks for the space.

technically it is possible

there is a gain knob for the rca inputs in the back

i used this for a 3 mic mix once with a nak cm300 omni split mono a little over each channel

edit: but you would still just record 2ch audio

Yep!  Run mics > XLR's + line feed from pre or sbd > RCA's.  Then use the gain nob on back to adjust line input levels.  Pretty easy to do.....  can be tough to get the levels from each source to where you'd like if it's loud.  I've done it by watching the peak light on the UA-5...  that can work well if you want a 50/50 mix.  You'd probably have an easier time by using your SVU as a measuring stick...

This is one great feature of the UA-5!!!

edit:  as caymen said....  it's still just a 2channel output.  What you get is what you get....  no splitting up sources in post.  Works great though if you dial it in just right!

yep, I've got that SVU. I will get levels for my mics, set levels, remove mics, get a feed from the board, set the levels with the SVU, insert mics back in and I should be good to go. correct?

Thanks Nordics.  ;D

I have that same set up but I use a set if 1/4" > RCA for the meter using the 1/4" output so I don't ever have to unhook the meter.  And with a dvd battery it makes for a sweet set up.  Also make sure your SVU  is calibrated.
