I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. I know if you open a 24/96 file AA opens it as 32 bit. If I do no editing I select save as and in options untick dithering and save as 24 bit. Does it matter if save all non audio information is ticked or unticked in this case. Another question if I only attenuate several peaks on the original 24/96 file do I save as mentioned like with no edits or does this become a 32 bit file after attenuating some peaks and now I need to dither down to 24 bit ??? I hope I made myself clear enough. Thanks in advance.

Here's a quick article on the issue:

http://www.audiorecording.me/32-bit-float-recording-bit-depth-vs-24-bit-complete-beginner-guide.html

FWIW, 24-bit recordings are opened as 32-bit float within Audition but rest assured it's still a 24-bit file when it's saved as long as your settings are correct (I've been doing this since 2008).  A tool like MediaInfoLite is a very handy one (which I have installed on my machine) and it will confirm the audio settings of the original raw file and the saved, edited one with a single right click.

I know some people here may dog me for saying this but if you're recording ambient sound with mics at a venue, 24/48 should be more than sufficient - the extra 48kHz of DATA is just wasted space.  Even when I have board access, I never roll higher than 24/48.  :)

I've been through that article, though it doesn't seem to answer my questions.

I think I found the answer to one of the 2 questions. If attenuating peaks or adding gain this does create 32bpf to the area of the workspace applied therefore I need to dither down to 24 bits which I've been doing since I also archive now my full high resolution 24 bit files as I also archive in redbook standard.  Hope that is correct. When I dither down to 16 bit I use the original 32bpf workspace to avoid having to dither down twice. My only question now assuming what I just said is correct and I think it is what about the "save all non audio information is ticked or unticked" ???? I've been having it ticked, but not sure if that is the right choice ???

If you check "Save all non audio information", it will save information like cue points.  Unless you need that, you're better off leaving that box unchecked as audio files with the additional info saved to them have been known not to play nice with some CD burning programs or other audio editing programs that don't recognize the cue points.
