Why U89s and not TLM170s?

I think the u89s sound much, much nicer than the tlm170's. I think the 170's are rather flat sounding in comparison to the u89s.
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

I think I also prefer the u89's.  although I've got Levi's tlm170 source for SPAC (6/19/04 + 6/20/04), and they sound great.  hit me up with a PM if you'd like to hear those shows.  (fwiw, both nights are TLM170's(hyper's)> V2> MiniMe> DA-P1)

I think Bryan Austin may have been at those shows... so yes, there may be a u89 source out there

FWIW, there is a single u89i on ebay right now.  2 days left and it's only at 500 bones.

:D

if this auction was about 2 weeks from now i'd might be all over it.  I've seen too many u89s go for cheap on ebay to not go for a pair ;)

the 170's are 'drier' than the 89's which have a 'warmer' feel IMO

i like the u89>v3 tapes especially :)

I'm sending a box of tapes to Heath... in there will be The Dead 7-10-03 from Red Rocks u89(subcard/nos)->v3... you should give it a listen 8)

Unbelievable!

I bought my u89i's brand new in early 2000 through a company in Connecticut. I was stupid and had no clue what I was doing. I could've saved a TON of money!

However, from what I understand, they're one of the last matched stereo pairs that Neumann made. On the other hand, they say the u89i's are so similar that there's no need to match them.

My mics did come in one of the big silver Neumann briefcases (which is pretty sweet, but too big to actually carry around), with shockmounts, windscreens, and cables.

I am looking for smaller shockmounts. Anybody know of any alternatives to the big Neumann baskets?
