zoom h2 hiss?
« on: October 01, 2008, 07:05:29 AM »
Hi
I recorded the flash of car with windows closed.

There is a lot of hiss...
Is this normal?

http://www.archive.org/details/carflash

What I want to do is to listen only to the flash ...
to hear that there is silence and the flash...
Is there anyway to achieve this?
Is this happening also to expensive recorders?

respect

Are you sure that's from the H2 and not from the car's ventilation system?

Are you using the internal mics or external mics through the mic in? The preamp for the external mic in is known to be noisy. I haven't noticed any noise with my H2 using the internal mics but then I am using it to record electric bands.

When talking about a cheap recorder with a cheap preamp noise is always a factor of too much gain. If you need alot of gain and you want a quiet recording I would suggest getting something with a better mic preamp built in or an external mic preamp with a good noise floor.

It sounds like normal noise from the recorder to me.  I had an H2 for a while and it's a decent recorder but for $200 you're not going to get a top of the line piece of equipment.  When using the internal mics you will get some noise when you turn the gain up.  It's just due to the unit having a budget preamp.  Like Chris said, if you want to get rid of noise buy a better external preamp and mics.

Yes, listening to that recording you were on something like Max gain? That's fairly normal for a Zoom at that gain setting. IMO that recording level is a tad high for the noise you are capturing.

The only suggestions I can make is this.

When recording a source like this get your mics closer and reduce your gain. The clicking sound is from a relay for the turn signal in your car find the source get the mic closer to it thus reducing the amount of gain needed and also reducing background noise. But there is a cost to this method.. The sound we associate of the turning signal is not at 1 inch from the relay its at more like 25 inches or more and we are also hearing complex reflections from the glass.. and interior of the car. With the H2 I would use all 4 mics to capture this source so you can recreate the sense of space in your recording. AGAIN try and get the source as close as you can with out changing the sound that we associate with a turn signal and you might have something. You also might discover you still need a preamp and a good set of mics.

I have had great luck (IMHO) using Chris Church's mics into his CA-9000 pre into the line in on the H2. Not to turn this into advertising but his CA-14 cardioid mics sound great! I don't own a pair (yet) but tried them out via his loaner program and was very happy with them. I have his CA-11 (omni's and cards) and they are fine mics but the CA-14s are better. His CA-CAFS (omni) also work quite well with this setup. But as I said before, I record electric bands so I can't say how good they will be for this sort of recording but I bet they beat the H2's internal mics/pre.
