Looks like a pretty good deal - capcity looks a little bit higher then a Tekkeon mp3450 (at 67Wh vs 50Wh)

A couple of things to note:
 - 5V USB only supports up to 500mA
 - You may not be able to lock the voltage (meaning if you bump the voltage selector in use then the voltage may change (description isn't clear on this))

Music can at the least least explain you and at the most expand you

Same battery as dscused here http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=157427.0

I think I'm going to order one as a backup to my Naztech. Has anybody gotten one of these yet?

Bumping this old thread because I finally ordered one of these from this listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/18000mAh-Universal-External-Battery-for-laptops-Mobile-Phones-PDAs-iPods-/130691172867?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item1e6dcd0a03#ht_3322wt_1131

Arrived after just a couple of days and works as expected. Fit and finish identical to the Naztech battery I already have, except this one is silver, not black.

- You may not be able to lock the voltage (meaning if you bump the voltage selector in use then the voltage may change (description isn't clear on this))

To change voltage on this one and the Naztech, you have to press and hold the voltage button until the display starts blinking, then you can cycle through the options. I have not been able to press and hold to enter the volt selection while anything is actually plugged in to the battery. Seems like it locks you out to protect your gear.

I'm doing a couple of tests with this battery to see how long it will run with some different gear. I'll have it running my hd-p2 until it can't anymore. If it is anything like the Naztech I own, 14 hours running the deck with phantom on should be pretty easy.

Battery test result: Set up my Tascam HD-P2 with the backlight on, phantom power on and powering Busman mics. Recorded for 13 hours 23 minutes before the battery ran too low.

When I tested the Naztech I had the backlight off. With such similar run times, I am confident that these are the same battery. The ebay version is simply unbranded and 45 bucks cheaper.

Plugs firmly into my m118 and vice versa for the charger for my preamp.  Im 90 percent sure that makes it an N connector.  100 percent sure its not an M   connector.

I could mail you one of the cables if you want, otherwise I'll try to measure it soon.

Ted, I'll be able to answer this for sure for you soon.  Since the battery is like a tekkeon in that it can be manually set to many voltages between 5V and 21V, it will work with virtually all of my gear.  I'm gonna figure out which of my respective pieces of gear I'm gonna dedicate this battery to and throw a cable together for it to confirm that N is the right connector.

This battery looks really nice. I'm worried about the voltage button though. It looks like it would be very easy to press the button by mistake and possibly increase or decrease the voltage to the device that is running on it.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

I just used my Naztech battery this past Saturday night.  In fact, I'd forgotten before going out to the venue to change the voltage setting, so once at the venue I had everything set up and turned on and wasn't getting any power to my preamp, which I had running off my battery.  That's when I remembered that I hadn't changed voltage.  The battery was kinda pissing me off because I couldn't get the damn voltage to change at all while I was holding that button down.  I was starting to sweat a little bit and it hit me that I probably couldn't change voltage with everything connected.  So I unplugged the battery and pushed the voltage button again.  Sure enough, was able to step through the voltage settings.

So, yeah once everything gets connected up, the battery voltage is 'fixed' at the voltage that has been selected.

(I've already mentioned that I love this battery and I've used it alot and I still love it.  AFAIC, it's a better battery than the tekkeon 3450 based on price and capacity.)

Hey Steve, were you able to confirm the the size of the output jack?  Is it an 'N' connector?

Paging Ted, can you make me a cable for this battery that will power my V3?

Picked up one of these last week.  Charged it up and then did a test run w/ a dr-680 at 12v.  Got about 10 hours before it went down to 1 bar left.  So far I think this is one heck of a good deal.

One nice thing about the battery is that the stock cable for dc-out fits the 680 without having to use any adapters.

One nice thing about the battery is that the stock cable for dc-out fits the 680 without having to use any adapters.

Man, this thing keeps better and better...  ;D Awesome!

Beaner, since you and Steve sometimes record together why not see if his battery and supplied connector fit your Sonosax next time you get together?

Hey Steve, were you able to confirm the the size of the output jack?  Is it an 'N' connector?

Paging Ted, can you make me a cable for this battery that will power my V3?

Sorry, I haven't yet.  Don't bank on this being an N connector just yet.  I'd hate it if you went ahead and had a cable made but the connector isn't the right size.

I was about to suggest this, then ran across this response.  Note that Ted does say that the Sax is close to an M connector, but not exact.  The stock cable should work, but remind me to bring the battery next time we're out.

Yes but I still need confirmation on the plug size on the battery end.

The easiest way is to take the battery down to radio shack and try the sample adapt-a-plugs they have.

Also, how long will this power a vms 02ib?

Trey, the simple answer is...a long time.  But here's a more detailed answer.

First, the battery rating is 18000mah at 3.7v, or 66Wh.  (I can verify from using my Natech that this is probably a good number, although my Naztech seems to spec out at a slightly higher capacity 15000mah at 5V is 75Wh.  Also, the experience testified in this thead seem to confirm that 66Wh probably isn't a bogus capacity claim.)

We need to supply the VMS with 9V minimum, so the battery rating at 9V is 7700mah.

I couldn't find the specs for the 52UB or 02IB, but the specs on the 5U are that it pulls about 230mA, which is really good.  I'd heard that the 5U is just a repackaged and combined 02ib and 52UB, so the current specs are probably similar.  But for conservatism, let's assume that the older preamps aren't as efficient...let's say 400mA.

7700mah / 400ma = 19.25 hours  (if you assume the 230mA number, that goes to 33.5 hours)

So, I'm gonna say you can conservatively assume that this battery will give you 20 hours, but you'd probably be safe if you even took that up to the range of 25 to 30.

This battery looks like a winner but I have a few questions that I hope someone might be able to answer:

1. Is there any possibility of the battery being turned off by its power button being accidentally pressed while in use, or does it lock that button as well (along with the voltage button) when it's connected to a device?

2. The USB output appears to be of proper specs (5v/500mAh) but has anyone successfully run a USB-powered device off it?  (ie: SD USBPre2, etc.)

3. Has anyone successfully run two devices off this battery at the same time, one via the DC output and the other via the USB output?

Thanks in advance for any info.

1)  There is no power button, so the battery can't be switched off accidentally.  The left button doesn't turn the battery on and off, in spite of the fact that the button has that power symbol ebossed on it.  The left button has several functions...first, hold it down briefly to see what the battery level is at...the number of bars.  Second, hold for three seconds to switch on the bettery.  That also on the display so that you can see what the voltage setting is.  It also turns on a backlight for the display.  Press and hold again to switch the display battery off.  Finally, with the battery/display switched on, hold down the right button for 3 seconds to cause the voltage setting to start flashing.  Once voltage setting is flashing, press the right hand button repeatedly to toggle through the various voltages.  At the voltage you want, press the left hand button and hold for three seconds to set the new voltage.

2)  I've powered my recorders from the USB connection.  My recorders require 5V dc.  Both of my recorders (DR100MKII and DR2D) both run for a LOOOONG time...at a festival they both get to the 4th day before I need to worry about the battery going dead.  I've never run it dead during a festival, but I think the battery would power either of my recorders for an entire four day festival if I didn't have any backup.

3) I wasn't able to verify, but I'm pretty sure that it works with two cables connected simultaneously, one on the USB and another on the output jack.  I'm think I read that this is the case somewhere, either in the literature or the Naztech website.

My experience is slightly different.  The usb output is always active.  But to use the other output the battery must be on.  If I turn it off my 680 turns off, and it won't turn on unless the battery is on.  So, yeah, I think it is a power button.  My wish is that it would be possible to turn the light off since it seems like a slight waste to keep it on the whole time.

Also I'm able to charge my phone via the usb port and power the 680 at the same time so they're both active.

Hey, you're right!  Sorry for the earlier misstatement (edited).  I didn't even realize that since I've always used the battery from the USB.  I just assumed that the other connection worked the same way.  Didn't even think that it wouldn't have, but since reading your response I verfied that my battery works the same way as yours.

Again, sorry for the misunderstanding...learn something new every day!

Bean there have been two 'standing' ebay listings for this battery for months now...see whenever John Bell initially posted about this battery.  Although I do think there are more ts people buying them up I'm pretty sure they'll still be available by the middle of the month.

When you live on the cusp of technology as we tapers often do it kinda goes with the territory.  ;)    I'm just glad you picked one up at the airport when you did.  Thanks to Nigel for his input, too.

LOL...well I paid $149 before tax for the Naztech branded version at the airport, so right now I'm wishing I'd have paid the $57 or so that these are selling for, but it's OK that's how it happens sometimes.

Can someone order one for me, and I'll pay you in a week or two ??? Im broke til the 12th :'( Bought too much gear 8) But if yinz think they will still be available then, then nevermind ;D

Bean there have been two 'standing' ebay listings for this battery for months now...see whenever John Bell initially posted about this battery.  Although I do think there are more ts people buying them up I'm pretty sure they'll still be available by the middle of the month.

Sweet. I have a nice stock of Energizer 9v batts anyway ;D

I hear you. I paid around $100 for the Naztech from Amazon.com. I thought I got an OK deal at the time. I was reluctant to pull the trigger earlier, but the "knock off" version has earned a spot in my bag without a doubt.

Is overcharging an issue with this battery? I think I read something about overcharging being really bad for lithium polymers... Forgive me a silly question, I don't know too much about the different types of rechargeable batteries.

I just got mine today. You guys didn't say how cool the box is, with the magnetic closing lid... This thing is awesome. It's got a ton of different tips and the stock cable is perfect for the DR-680.

I'm going to charge it up and test it over the weekend. This is a great battery for <$60!

Thanks for he heads up.

what I have gathered from this thread.

1.) the DC female output on the unit is a "N" 5.5mm X 2.5mm
2.) The stock cable terminates in a "M" 5.5mm x 2.1mm

Ted and others.  This is a bit off.  I double checked the stock cable and its got the same connectors on both ends.  These are not M connectors because I confirmed that a male M connector will not fit into the female jack on the battery.  And earlier in this thread it was confirmed that the battery end of the cable has an N connector, so that means both ends of the cable have an N.

What I think must be going on is that since the hole in the N connector is slightly larger, the male N connector can work in a female M jack, but not vice versa.

That said, the tips that are included with the standard batch of tips includes an M tip, so nobody should have any problem with the stock cable and your dr680, which apparentnly uses an M.

Sounds to me based on what's being reported that 680 owners have the option of using either the stock cable with the n connector or adding the M tip onto the end of the stock cable.

Hmmm... On my battery, only one end of the stock cable will fit in the DC out jack. I tried it multiple times. The other end does indeed work with the DR-680. This may be one of the best investments I've made in a while. This battery is really slick.

I also noticed that if I hold the power button in for 3+ seconds when it's connected to the DR-680 the battery will shut down and power to the DR-680 is cut. I always run my 680 with internal batteries installed, so that's not a huge issue for me.

^ OK, good info Chuck.

Lesson learned then seems to be that the stock cable that comes with Naztech branded battery isn't identical to those being sold on ebay.  I'll confirm this in a week or so...I just ordered an ebay version last night.

Your experience with the on-off button seems consistent.  I didn't realize that button was an on-off since I'd been using my battery from the USB connector for 5v applications, but yesterday Drewloo corrected me and when I double checked I confirmed my battery works the same way.

Someone asked about accidental shut off of the battery, but since it requires a 3 second push and the button isn't all that easy to push in, I don't see the possibility of accidental on-off of the battery with it sitting in a gear bag.

OK. I got a new-to-me Lunatec V2 so I decided to try one last test of this battery. I wired up a custom dual power cord using the stock one provided with tips for a tascam hdp2 and a lunatec v2 so I could power both devices at once.

Had this battery running Busman Mics > Lunatec V2 > Tascam HD-P2 with backlight on for over 6 1/2 hours before the power dropped too low.

I'm pleased. Since I also have the Naztech version I don't HAVE to run both devices off one battery, but it's nice to know I can more than make it through a show off one battery.

^  So, just to understand details...

From the battery, you were going out of the single connector to a single cable that then splits (or made a 'y') into two.  One side of the cable goes to the 4-pin XLR power connector on the V2 and the other side goes to the connector on the HD-P2.  The Busman mics are getting phantom power from the P2.  I figure the battery was probably set to 12V, right?

Is this correct?

Pretty close.  Yes I made a custom Y cable to feed the 4-pin on the V2 and the barrel plug of the tascam.

The battery was set to 9V which runs both pieces gear just fine. I could use 12 V, but I would have to tweak the V2.

Mics were powered by the V2 which was feeding into the tascam via line in.  Tascam was on and recording with the backlight on.

Do any of you electrical guys know if it would be OK to put a 12v zener diode across the +12v and ground wires on the power cable to ensure that no more than 12v DC makes it to my recorder? I'm still a bit paranoid about over voltaging my DR-680 by mistake.

Alternatively, if you have a volt-ohm meter, set your battery at 12V and confirm it's putting out a consistent 12V before connecting it to your 680.  I don't do it much, but I've been known to carry my meter out to the venue, particularly during a festival, to verify battery voltages in order to confirm when it's time to swap them out.  That said, based on your message, you're probably wanting a circuit to give you peace of mind for protection against over-voltage, so disregard my suggestion if that's your only goal.

I actually do have a small pocket multi-tester I carry with me.
I just don't want to have any chance that the voltage could change and destroy my recorder.

Just got mine yesterday. Very nice! So the LED does not show a 5V setting? Just 9-21V? So I will assume that when the USB is connected it really is outputting 5 volts even though the display shows 9V? No matter what I do my display will not show a 5V setting. Did I get a reject? :P

No, that's how they all work.  The USB puts out 5v no matter what.  The battery doesn't need to be switched on for you to get 5v from that connection.

The other connection is active when the battery is switched on...dead when the battery is off.  This connection supplies the voltage that's displayed in the window...between 9 and 21v.  You're correct, 5v is not one of the options from that connection.

Just wanted to add my two cents ...  First, thanks to all for the heads-up on this great product.  I received mine today and it looks to be a terrific replacement for my dying DVD battery.  The stock cable fit my V3 and powered it up, but as it seemed to be a slightly wobbly connection, I attached one of the adapter plugs (labelled "C") which provide a more snug fit.

I'll post any more thoughts as I use it.

V3 power plugs are designed to work with a locking switchcraft coaxial connector.  Others may work but it's best to use what is designed for the machine.

Anybody try one of these with an R-44 yet? Just got mine in the mail, looks like I'll need to use an adaptacable since as I can see there is no way to reverse polarity with the stock cable. Are we still sure the batt input is an "N" tip? Guess I'll find out for sure when I'll take the cable to the shack tomorrow but figured I'd ask here

Edit to add: "N" tip fits the batt input like a glove, Works perfectly set to 12v with the R-44, polarity reversed of course. Haven't tested for run time but based on comments here it should go for hours on end

Could I use this to power a DVD battery while the DVD battery is in use?

I got this to run my 680, but usually I'm plugged into the wall so this goes unused.  However, I often forget to charge the DVD batts for my preamp since they generally last a while, but they were low recently and I had this sitting in the bag, which got me thinking.  Can I just set it 9v and plug it into the DVD battery to keep power flowing?

Get a power cable for the 18000mah battery for your V2 and it with use it for the V2!!

I could, but its another custom cable I don't really need.  The two DVDs are more than enough, I just hadn't charged them in weeks and went to Dumpstaphunk, so was wondering if this was an option just in case.  The cable that comes with this battery fits into the DVD battery input, so not knowing anything about batteries was wondering if I could just run them together without damaging anything.

No, looks to me like you can't.  I have both a DVD battery and this 18000mah battery, so in order to answer your question, I grabbed both batteries and my multi-meter to test whether it's possible.

Turns out that when you connect the 18000mah battery (set at the proper recharge voltage, which is 12V), the voltage on the ouput connector drops to 0.3V from the 9.25V that it was reading before anything was connected to the input connector.  Sorry for being the bearer of bad news...

As an FYI, I assume you saw earlier in this thread that this battery comes with a cable that others have verfied works straight up with the DR680...no custom cable needed.

Very much appreciated!  Thanks for checking that out.

My question was actually about potentially powering my preamp (V2) not the 680.  I didn't make that very clear if you're just skimming it.  The V2 4 pin XLR power input isn't the most universal option in the world.   :P

Just got this battery and cable for my V2 from tgakidis last night.  The cable looks and works great.   The front panel is already coming off the battery though.  Going to to use it to power V2 and deck.  Plenty of empty space in my bag without the SLA battery. Going to get to use them tonight.  I have not done much taping in the last 10 years so was trying to be cheap with the SLA batteries.  Now I don't know why I was carrying those batteries and not that much cheaper.  Thanks.

Well, I've just discovered what I would assume could be a potentially dangerous flaw/malfunction.  Every time I plug in the power cord into the side 18v DC input, it sparks.  Very small, yellow sparks.   :(  It doesn't seem to be a particularly powerful discharge, these isn't any noise, popping or odor, but that definitely shouldn't be happening.

Anyone else experience this?

I don't think it's an issue.  I think sparking can happen on any device when you plug it in, but it probalby doesn't happen with typical products (hair dryers and such) because the circuit isn't completed when you plug it in.  It's only completed when you flip the switch to start electricity flowing.  Maybe since this is 18V, there's a bigger spark and it's more visible.

Again, not sure, but I bet if you turned out the lights and plugged in alot of your typical household devices while they're turned on you'd see a spark when you plug it in.

Anyway, just plug your recharger into the battery first and then plug the recharger into the wall outlet second, instead of vice versa.

On both of my batteries the upper left front panel is not glued on as good as the other corners and back plate just fine.  Not a big deal, just pushed it down and kind of stuck on a little more.  Typical Chinese made.  Worked great last night and happy with it so far.

Mine sparked too (kind of a lot) when plugging in the DC with the batter powered on but if turned off no sparks.

I'm very happy with mine. I was worried that it would be easy to over-voltage my DR-680 with it by mistake. But, I've found that it always reverts back to the last voltage used every time. It's lighter than lead and powers my recorder for at least ten hours without recharging.

How many channels running phantom have you used to get that run time?

Also, good to hear the sparks are not too much to worry about.

Has anyone heard any noise on recordings using this battery?
I just got one; haven't given it my "noise check" yet and don't want to use it in a concert until I do.
This seems like a great battery (once I figure out how to protect the power switch).

IIRC there was some low level noise with the ultra cheap batteries from China; the ones a lttle larger than a pack of cigs. (was it voltage regulator?)
I have one of those too and could see that noise when zoomed in on the waveform.  I could hear it but only on the quietest parts.

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks.
Used it yesterday on my 680 to record a symphonic band and pipe organ.
Worked great; no noise at all that I can hear or "see".
Still paranoid about using it on the 680 at 12v.  Just used it at 9v.
Think I remember it reading 12.39v on my meter.  No problems though just using it at 9v.
If I invent a "safety" for the power button, I'll share. (maybe a velcroed rigid plate)

Here's a thread on tip sizes for lots of the gear we use here...
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=150794.0

From Ted's list in that link, the battery end of the cable would need the following tip:
Naztech PB15000 Universal Power Bank Charger / 9,12,16,18,19,20,21V / Size N, 5.50mm OD × 2.50mm ID

(Note that the Naztech is the same as this battery.  The only difference is branding.)

Here are the details for the UA-5
Edirol UA5 / 9v / Size M, 5.50mm OD × 2.10mm ID / Center pin (-)  Ring (+) Reverse Polarity / Know to run off 7.2v w/ no issues

It's important to note that the UA-5 is reverse polarity.  It won't run with switched polarity although you won't damage the preamp if you do apply reverse polarity since it's protected...it just won't power on.

For the Littebox with a DIN-3 conector, you'd need...well a DIN-3 connector.  LOL.

Yup as long as you have the right cable and set it to 12V, it'll work.  Based on the fact that my tekkeons are 40WHr batteries and and run my AD2K for around 2 3/4 - 3 hours and this battery is 66WHr, you should get between 4 and 5 hours out of one of these.  I'm gonna be recording over the weekend...I don't usually use mine for the AD2k, but if I do I'll let you know how it works out.

They appear the same to me.  18000mah Power Bank is the key phrase on all the sales.

Ebay has a variety of different BIN prices right now, from $55 - $130.  Makes you wonder if the price trend isn't going to be going up on these.

Power flows through the USB port even when the battery is off.

Just got mine and have set up my bag with my new GAK power cables :). Found my deck on and idling this morning after thinking I had powered down my whole bag when I shut off the "Powerbank" last night. Just an observation, I'm super psyched about the battery.

They're still listed under Naztech PB15000.  Not quite as good a deal, but still worth the prices they're asking.  The one's that are listed as used are $53 without any tips or the connector cable, but if you already have those that might be a decent option.  These haven't been around so long that I'm not sure I would go for one of the used ones.  I bought my black Naztech when they were new on the market for $160 probably less than a year ago, but if it's been a year it hasn't been much more than that, so I wouldn't think the used batteries are any older than that.

I just tested mine to see how long it would power my laptop with the lid open/screen on streaming. 2 hours 15 minutes.

Not sure if you think that's good or not.  2 hours plus is actually pretty good.  Laptops are power hungry, especially with the screen on.  I think most laptops need around 19V - 21V.

You got 2 1/4 hours, so that's about 8amps (18000mah / 2.25hr), which is a heavy load for a portable electronic device.

Brain Fart you all. Need a little help. I have the silver one and today I was going to plug it up and charge it. The small brick says 19 volt 2.1 amp and the battery says 18 volt on the input and 2 amp. The brick says it is model:020 Universal AC adapter. It looks like what I remember pulling out of the box. Any help would be appreciated before I test this combination. ;-)

Even a black Sharpie will work. You may have to tilt the adapter so the viewing angle is just so then the writing will appear. I started doing that years ago when the adapters had been breeding like bunnies and all my markings are still legible. It works even if not as well as a silver/white marking pen and nowhere near as well as using a label maker but even black markings have allowed me to identify adapters I would otherwise have not known what they were meant to charge. Considering after a few years the black Sharpie tends to turn brown thus making the writing a little easier to read any marker should work, just depends how prominant you want the writing to be.

One more bonus on the Sharpie's!

I lost my Sound Devices charger coming home from Panic En La Playa. I thought I might have left it in the room. I filled out a lost and found report online for Atlanta Hartsfield Airport and mentioned the sharpie.

I just got a call from ATL. They had my SD charger and my Canon HV30 charger that I left at TSA when they ravaged my bag. They ripped my computer bag  apart and put it through xray in numerous bins.

woohoo!!

Does anyone with more electrical savvy than I know if you can charge this battery with 12V instead of 19V? I use a 12V boat battery to re-charge things when camping with no electric hook up, wondering if it will still work but just take longer or what. Not exactly sure how all this voltage stuff works. Thanks
