time to buy a home dat deck
« on: September 20, 2003, 05:09:14 AM »
i think it's about time to buy a home dat deck to limit the hours i put on my d100.  i know pretty much nothing about home decks so i'd like some advice on what brand/model would be best.  any suggestions on what i should look for?  also what are the chances i can get a decent deck in the $100 to $200 range?

tascam da20 mk II or Fostex d5.  pretty much the same machine.  the d5 has xlr and optical i/o.  right price range.  bomber machines.

I would avoid the Sony PCM-R300 unless you get an amazing deal.  I have one, and while I love it, I had to get the transport modified earlier this year due to it having some model specific issues.  Cost me a ~$200 to get it done at Pro-Digi.  Unit works great now, and Paul told me it should last well beyone my DAT taping, so I am happy.  But this is something you should consider with regards to getting a new one.

This is the r300, but at a good bin price!  I was actually thinking of buying it myself, but I am gonna hold off a bit for another home deck.

if you can get one for a good price go ahead and get a 500, they are incredible machines. definitely a step up from the tascams and the fostex's (both of which are a step up from the r300).

my one bitch about the da20mkII is that the dac in it sucks ass... the r500 is worth the extra money just for that.

can i play 90m tapes in the da20mkII?  i thought i remembered hearing that one of the tascams can't play the 90m tapes.  thanks for all the advice, i was looking at the r300 on ebay but after hearing about nick's issues i think i'll pass on it.

the da30's do not play nicely with 90's. I'd say more than 50% (say around 350) of my tapes are 90ms and neither my da20mkII or my da20 has ever complained  8)

"HOUR 00 10"

this thing doesnt even have a scratch on it.
