Title: What type of mic caps to use in an ampitheatre?
Post by: phishn on April 24, 2004, 05:31:13 PM
Hi all,

What caps do you usually use in an ampitheatre?  Hypers or Cards?  I'll be hopefully taping the Phish shows at Tweeter Center, Mansfield MA and this will be my first ampitheatre recording.  Any special configs used?  I'm thinking of running DIN or a smaller angle aimed more towards the stacks.

I would run the hypers in DIN. That is basically my default config for amphitheaters. You Usually don't want to run cards from that far back, unless that's all you've got.

thanks jason.  My original feeling was to run hypers, but then i thought about the fact that there are no side or back walls in an ampitheatre and that maybe cards would do.

Cards would totally work, it's just that you may pick up more ambient crowd noise and unwanted sounds if you ran them from that far back. Hell, run cards the first set and hypers the second, and see which you think sounds the best.

like Jason said, run em both and find out for yourself... there will be plenty of tapers and sbds available for download too, Phish is a pretty low pressure taping situation now ;D

have fun with it and run em both!

Unless, of course, it's windy.  Don't want to be running hypers in the wind.  ;)

Thanks all..+T.  I most likely will run hypers if its not windy night 1.  If I don't like em, I'll run cards night 2.

I default to hypers if it's a shed, cards or wider if it's completely open-air

im assuming the tweeter center in mansfield is a shed.  its open on the back and sides but is covered by a roof.  think ill run hypers if its not windy.
