Title: TSKB: Which HDTV for $1000-$1400
Post by: NOLAfishwater on April 02, 2009, 01:32:46 PM
OK. So I am getting a check for $1500 for my old TV that was under warranty. My price range is $1000-1400 b/c I need to leave $100 for mounting hardware. The question is LCD or Plasma and which model. I used to have a 50" DLP b/c I hate glare on the screen. I also use the TV as my computer monitor so a VGA input is a must. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Skip the VGA input.  I thought the same thing and spend an extra $200 for it...  Later I figured out it is cheaper to buy a HDMI Video Card for my PC and run that into an extra HDMI input on the TV...

We got a Panasonic Plasma... Its very nice...

Did I mention that I hate glare. My living room has 5 large windows and have always noticed that Plasmas have a great deal of reflections. Don't some TV's come with a non glare finish on the screen?

Then get something other than a Plasma...  It requires a dark(er) room...

Or you could buy curtains...

samsung are pretty. just spent the last 30min in meeting watching new HD stuff on one..

Also, HDMI to vga or to DVI works great... no need for vga in.

My dad picked up a 46" Bravia (not sure if it's the same model that sygdwm linked above), he also uses it with the pc. If I had the cheese right now, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

If using as a pc monitor, I'd keep burn-in in mind when looking at plasmas...

Well, I am waiting to get my final check. Leaning towards the Sony 46" new model which has the 120hz. Def not going for a plasma. The rep from the warranty company told me to stay away from plasmas many companies are not making them anymore and have stopped making replacement parts. That means that LCD's are going to win the battle in the end.

I have the 52" XBR2. Looks great. LCD is the only option at 9200' elevation.

Just a quick note to possibly save some cash on the mount, check out monoprice.com.  I got a tilting, extendable mount for a 42 plasma for like $60, and its very nice.  Wouldnt buy a mount anywhere else.
