Title: Another MR-1 newb question - what levels should I use with CA-9100?
Post by: ScotK on May 06, 2009, 11:15:18 PM
I'm getting ready to record some shows this weekend.
My chain will be CA-14 -> CA-9100 -> Korg MR-1.
What's the optimal levels to set the MR-1 to if I'm
going to be able to use the 9100 to control my input levels?

Somewhere I read about -6db would be a good place to start?

thanks,

scot

It depends on how loud the source is, and your mic placement relative to the source. I use the CA-11's, and I've had good luck in cranking the 9100 gain (+20 dB), then doing the fine adjusting on the MR-1. For the past couple of shows, I've had to add about +5 dB to +10 dB on the MR-1. If you are recording to 1-bit, I usually try to get it to -6 dB, with transient spikes hopefully not surpassing -3 dB to 0.

-6 is supposed to be unity gain on the MR 1, so that is indeed a good place to start. Get the first 20 dB of gain you need from the ST-9100. Better to add additional gain in post than to go above +6 on the MR-1. Edtyre has reported that setting the MR-1 above +6 or +8 adds noticeable noise.

I have gotten great results recording moderately loud to loud sources leaving the MR-1 at -6, getting some gain from the ST-9100 (to peak at around -12 to -20) and adding more gain in post.

Ended up taping one quieter show with +6 on the MR-1 and the second at 0.
I'll see how it sounds in post when I get home.  Thanks for the advice! :)
