FS: AKG C-501E / C-502E Electret Condenser Microphones, 3 Extra Capsules

The combination of the CE-1 / CE-2 mic capsules and the SE-5E powering modules constitute the C-501E / C-502E microphone combos.

The CE-1 cardioid and CE-2 omnidirectional capsules have built-in FET preamplifiers, and are finished in nickel-plated brass. Sensitivity with the SE-5E powering module is -48dBm (EIA G11: -141dBm).

Dimensions of each CE-1 / CE-2 capsule are 1.45 inches long x .80 inches diameter, weight is 0.5 ounce.

Each microphone combo comes in the original AKG microphone case, with foam and the original AKG mic clip.

The SE-5E powering module mates with any of the capsules to make a complete microphone terminated with 3-pin XLR-type connector. In addition to its electrical functions, the powering module forms the body or shaft of the microphone.

The module house one PX-23 battery or equivalent (I have 2 of these, but not sure if they're still any good, probably not), on/off switch and audio output circuitry. Provides low-impedance output, and may be used in phantom-powered system (on/off switch is bypassed when phantom powering is used).

Frequency range - 10-25,000 Hz
Approx. Battery Life - 550 hours continuous, 1000 hours intermittent
Acceptable Phantom-Power Source: 9-52 volts DC (via suitable voltage-dropping network)
Finish - Nickel-plated brass
Overall Dimensions: 4.625 inches long x 13/16 inches diameter
Net weight (including battery): 3 oz.

The following is from the AKG Microphone Brochure:

C-500 SYSTEM MODULAR ELECTRET-CONDENSER MICROPHONES

Matches any application - with add-on/interchangeable precision capsules.

AKG pioneered this exciting modular concept with its earlier introduction of the world-famous C-450 studio condenser system. This new C-500 Electret-Condenser System also provides studio quality and astonishing versatility - at a cost within the reach of most budgets. The C-500 system offers 5 interchangeable transducer capsules and a common, mating powering module. Simply changing capsules can create different microphones for different applications - anything from rock vocals to motion-picture sound. 4 complete basic microphone "combos" are available.
Furthermore, all components are available separately and can be added as requirements grow.

C-501E: BASIC CARDIOD "COMBO"

Invaluable in most home or studio recording, broadcast and sound-reinforcement applications. Cardiod pattern reduces background noise and feedback, and provides better isolation between microphones. Complete microphone including CE-1 cardiod capsule with built-in FET reamplifier, SE-5E powering module with battery,
SA-11/1 stand adapter and foam-lined carrying case.

C-502E: BASIC OMNIDIRECTIONAL "COMBO"

Recommended for home or studio recording and broadcasting where extra "hall" ambience may be desired, where extended low-frequency response is needed or where several nstrumentalists, vocalists or other performers are to be grouped around a single microphone. Complete microphone including CE-2 omnidirectional capsule with built-in FET preamplifier, SE-5E powering module with battery,
SA-11/1 stand adapter and foam-lined carrying case.

C-505E: VOCALIST'S CARDIOD "COMBO"

Ideal for pop and rock vocalists, stand-up comics and emcees. Internal shock mounting and a fixed wire-mesh windscreen / pop filter make this microphone perfect for hand-held and "close-talking" use. Attractive, contemporary styling lends professionalism to every performance. Identical in all other respects to the C-501E combo.
Complete microphone including CE-5 cardiod capsule with built-in FET preamplifier,
SE-5E powering module with battery, SA-11/1 stand adapter and foam-lined
carrying case.

They precede the 300b's.  Nice starter mics.

They seem to be going for < $100, on average, on ebay when they pop up.  They have been out of production since the early/mid 80s AFAIK.

I'll quote myself from the Team AKG thread.

Official AKG owner  8)

I just picked up two AKG SE-5E bodies and three CE-1 caps.

The original purchase was 4 bodies, 4 CE-1's, two of the CE-5 caps and 4 mounts by a church for their choir setup. Guy purchased them, minus two mounts, for studio use for his band from 1979-1980 and they have been "basically sitting for 30 years". Said he has broken them out for studio use one a few times since the early 80s and they have been in smoke free environment their entire life.

His first deal was that he wanted to sell me 3 bodies and 3 caps. I explained to him that I would hate to split up a pair even if they weren't matched. He respected that and instead offered an original clear plastic mount and an extra CE-1 cap since he was only interested in keeping the CE-5s' for himself. Again, I urged him to keep the two remaining mounts with the pair. He knocked $10 off the already cheap price and gave me a replacement mount for the hell of it.

Upon readong my quote I see that I never really answered your question. The answer would be Craigslist from a local retired guy who had a band in the late 70s-early 80s.

Here is an ebay item that shows the CE-2 cap on a SE5C body that I can't find any info on at all on the AKG website. I'm assuming they are a model or two older than the 5E but I just found it interesting... plus I'm hunting for the omni caps now. :)

These look to be in better condition than a lot of 460's i've seen on ebay.

Bumped because I added a link to a sweet pdf that is the original engineering data sheet for the body and caps. very cool indeed!

Still hunting CE-2 caps! judging by the new data that CE-8s aren't worth shopping for.

Kenny is still rockin' his CE-1's>Uher reels. I hang out with him and his wife and another couple they are friendly with every Thanksgiving weekend at Railroad Earth's Horn O' Plenty fest. Mancy is a trip.

I bought two of these on Ebay recently.  They haven't arrived yet, but I'll share some feedback.

This has already been mentioned, but looks like these were replaced by the SE300B/CK Blue Line series.  I think the SE5E bodies were $279 new.

Any recording I've made before 2013 used SE-5Es or C1000s and most the rest are AKG 391b. Plenty to hear in a lot of situations. Cheers!
