Title: Attenuator Cable Questions
Post by: jb63 on September 26, 2012, 03:54:24 PM

So I was wrong with my statement that one could use the headphone out jack and then just adjust the levels for your camera in jack.

Even the lowest level of ANY of my various recorder's headphone-out setting is way too hot for the Lumix GH2 or the Lumix FZ150.
The 150 doesn't have the level-controls of the GH2, so I'll probably sell that one off, but neither of them will do any good without the ability to get an audio feed into them.

I assume some kind of Attenuator Cable is necessary, but what kind?

I regularly see this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sescom-LN2MIC-PMD620-Attenuation-9-DSLR-Cable-Marantz-Line-to-mic-4041-/320833057251

which seems to be telling me that I need a 33dB L Pad.

Can that be true? Is it possible to make something like this longer and cheaper than the 9" one they are shilling above?

Any help is good help.

To make matters MORE annoying, the in jack on the in-jack on the lumix cameras is in a tricky cramped spot, and it isn't 1/8" but the next size smaller, a 2.5mm plug.

Does it really need to be a -33db pad?

I go line out of my m10 into a mic in jack on my camcorder all the time while using a 20db cable
Mines like 9 inches too and I just have a six foot 1/8 cable gaffes to make the reach

Isn't that the same as me just using the phones out on the M10 and turning the volume down?

Jon, what would your build time and cost on an annoying -20dB cable be?

Thanks,

That's OK.

;-)

I think I am going to go this route:

http://www.amazon.com/Sescom-LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N-Microphone-Attenuation-Cameras/dp/B004U3S1JA

or

http://www.amazon.com/Sescom-LN2MIC-ZMH4-MON-Attenuation-Headphone-Monitoring/dp/B004VIOZSK

or possibly

http://www.amazon.com/Sescom-LN2MIC-ZMH4-GH1-Attenuation-Panasonic-Interface/dp/B004YUAGLU

though I am skeptical that the 2.5mm plug is going to fit into the Lumix in-jack:

so its looking like a lot of coupling cables...

Sorry for the late reply, i use this in situation where i cant lower the output level when recording from soundboards and it works fine.  I thought it would work for your situation but i guess not
