Title: Active storage options/ideas
Post by: willndmb on January 28, 2014, 08:56:57 AM
I have Naiant actives so the cables unhook from the collete/cap and I have been doing so because I take extra care in stuff I own. This doesn't bother me much but it does take extra time to set up/shut down.
I am looking for safe ways to store my actives in bag with the cables still attached if anyone has an ideas
Tia

Depending on how long your cables are, a Pelican 1010 case, with or without the foam depending on size needed, might be a good option for transportation to and from the venue. For long term storage, I'd probably suggest any form of tupperware to avoid the pluck-n-pull foam from eventually deteriorating near the mics.

I've been using a Pelican 1060 with my naiant akg actives with the extension cable attached, windscreens and caps on. I coil up the cable and it all lays nice in there. I also have room for my schoeps mk5s on KCYs also with screens on. I use a smaller piece of foam across the top to keep them from jostling and close it up. works pretty well but isn't super small.

For just the KCY or the the akg's the smaller pelican like the 1010 is a possibility I've been considering to break up the space used a bit.

I'm still running the cables coiled as delivered from Naiant (with the Velcro straps) and have since left my CK6x caps attached to the coupling/binder, wrapped that in the CK61 bubblewrap and placed that in an Otterbox 1000 with a package of desiccant.  Works perfectly for me and the caps/couplings have no way of moving.

I take mine off the cable, but also use an otterbox 1000.  You could drill two small holes for the cables to exit from and keep them attached.

I'll do a pic tonight. I have the 6' tb cables and a 15' extension I had Ted make me. I keep the extension and a schoeps KCY extension separate with other cables so not in this box but I guess I could. Hmmm, not a bad idea actually at least for the akg extension cable. not sure why i haven't tried that yet.  :hmmm:

My PFA cables are short, about 2' each maybe? and I keep them in a separate little bag along with my schoeps PFA.  I have them if I need them but generally I'm using the actives these days through my tinybox. I do the same with the P48 adapters for tinyboxes. In fact I think I use the little black velvet bags my tinyboxes came in. I bring them with me so I have them if needed but don't use them too often.

I got the PFAs shorter since I can just use an existing XLR pair to go a distance and don't need to carry along a ton more cable just in case.

At a typical gig (i like to run two rigs when I can)

so i have the PFAs and P48 adapters in case I need them but generally I don't and they don't take up much space. I do occasionally decide to run stagelip or something where I need a long run and then I'll go for the PFAs so nice to have them. Or if I need to run into another recorder that only has XLR in. it's all about options and not getting yourself stuck.

That's way more info than you were looking for probably but I got going and figured I'd provide context for my decisions.  :P

FWIW, I have the Nbob actives hard-wired to the PFA's, @ 12'. I keep the caps attached. It fits nicely in a plastic single AKG capsule case. I keep the foamies on in transit. Other caps I keep in Pelican 1010's.

My hardwired 12' NBobs are on the way.  Thanks for the idea.  I have one of the AKG capsule cases and will give this a try  ;)

Pretty sure it's these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AKG-C480-Microphone-Windscreen-Black-Foam-from-Windtech-1300-series-5071-13-/321147226100?pt=US_Pro_Audio_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac5ddc7f4

nothing special and they are a little loose but do the job.

Mine are stored like Ultfris101 with the extension cable and PFA in the cigar caddy.

I use an old Eco-Charge battery Bag with windcreens on my NBob actives.

I keep my Schoeps caps all wired up to my preamp. I just keep them in DPA UA0896 screens when in transport and indoors. These are relatively newer screens and they DO NOT shed. I just tested them and got ZERO shedding ;) I probably should store them in a small pelican or the like, but this works out perfectly when just traveling to Pittsburgh or so. Keeps my caps in MINT condition[since the screens never come off] and its super lo-pro ;) As always, YMMV, but I have never had a problem storing active caps like this and Ill continue to store them that way unless I feel its unsafe, which hasent happened to me since I bought actives in 2007!!!
