this is a budget piece that sounds okay stock and can sound better with some modifications

you "should" be playing your masters on the best player that fits within your budget.... no doubt there are nicer players out there, but they will also cost you a lot more...

there's a lot of info on the 4960 is this forum

Thanks bud...Larry, let's try a +T, at this rate, I might be back to zero by 2047 :P

Glad everyone likes the deal, and for what it is, it does the job.  The mods if done right can cost anywhere between 40 bucks, all the way up to 350 depending on what you want to do.

Is this free ware gapless??

worse it's not even beta, it's in alpha testing.
It takes command line skills and moderate computer knowledge.

The real problem with gapless and DVD-A seems to be the playback devices.

Does anyone have seamless playback on hi-res stereo DVD-A  ?

audio-dvd-creator

perfect authoring every time and for 24/96 sources, DVD-A gains you nothing.

It's not free but for $40, think of how much time you'll save verses figuring out the problems with a pre-beta release.

I just picked up the Marantz DV7600, but for $50 I may just order this to compare it to, and maybe kick in a few mods.  I really doubt that it'll become that great, but it's worth a shot for a few bucks, I guess.

Audio DVD creator...I couldnt get it go make gapless tracks on my decks.  that software is deck dependent when it comes to DAO, and some decks are very bad w/their gaps.  other are not.  not sure about my new toshiba though.  haven't tried.  iv'e been burning gapless DVD-A ever since I picked it up.
I prefer discwelder chrome any way.

Carl..we listened to some ADVDC dics on the philips at your house...there was a click between tracks.  not bad...but you could hear it.

not sure about the other software titles.
this toshiba would make a shitty transport any way.  but for $60.  wtf.

I have a Toshiba SD4960 and definitely hear ticks between tracks when playing DVD-A discs authored in Wavelab 5.  I have been using ADVDC and don't hear any ticks between tracks with those discs.  For those that have Discwelder and the SD4960, do those discs have the ticks or no???  I'm hoping this is just a Wavelab+SD4960 issue.

I have the samsund HD841 which is the same rebranded unit as the 4960 and I have seamless playback with ADVDC...wavelab gave me gaps and a discwelder authored disc I had gave me ticks

wavelab gave me slight gaps on playback on my denon 2900.  ADVD's have been seamless though once in a blue moon, I'll hear a slight gap.  I'm thinking that is a burning issue though...

I was living in Jackson Hole without a care in the world when cd-r's were implemented.  I was strictly DAT and all was easy.  When I moved back in 2001, there were no issues with burning cdrs or even transferring DAT to HD.  It seemed like most of the kinks had been worked out...

Going through the DVD+/-RW/DL bullshit has me at wit's end, so my question is, was it this difficult when cdr's were first used?  Life will be gravy once this all works out!

William - I was just going to post that I vaguely remember a lot of similiar issues when cdr trading first started, so I think there's hope

I just re-upped on a new dvd burner and had a successful burn over my lunch break, but last night, I wasn't so successful.  I just can't believe that this is so flakey...  I'm about to the point were I think the only way it'll work out is if I get a new computer and start fresh.  I've got a bandaid for now, so we'll see how long it lasts

I am glad everyone is enjoying thier steal of the week.  I will see what other steals I can find on a regular basis.  Start the mods by getting some blue-tac or even some sticky floor laminate at your local store.  Open the unit up, and dampen the chassis as well as the actual POS plastic mechanism the cd goes in.  The next step would be a lot more involved and further reading can be had a few threads down.  Just ask if you happen to have some questions.

Enjoy

Sorry to here that b/c mine played everything I threw at it. PAL & NTSC dvd (originals and backups), svcd burned to dvd-r, SACD, DVD-A, mixed content PAL/NTSC dvd-r....everything really except vcd (which I didn't try b/c I don't have any). Good luck

Well I set the thing up. I tossed stings "bring on the night" in and it fired right up. I had the headphones on and it sounded good (headphones through my amp)

I grabbed a cd-r of a live show I had and it started right up. Cool i thought. then I went to skip a track and it took a bit then started playing the track i was previously listening to. hmm I thought. So I stopped it and ejected it. Put it back in and then it wouldnt do antything it just stayed on the "LOAD" screen.

So I grabbed another silverback and it would just stay on load also. I grabbed a DVD and it did the samething. I powered it down unplugged it. Gave it several minutes and powered it back up. Samething. Called Toshiba and they answered the phone FAST. Guy was like call hhgreg and see what the return policy is (we only have refurbs he says).

hhgreg - took forever to answer the phone but thats my only complaint. They are supposed to be overnighting me a return label and as you as it scans returning they will ship a new unit. I figured that was good customer service. So if everything goes according to plan it wont be that big a deal at all

I just tried DVDA in mine. I'd better pull it back out of the box and throw some other formats at it tonight. (I picked it up as a back-up to my 4900)

I thought that I would post my experience with hhgreg.

I have to say that I am very happy with them. I was a little concerned giving the amount of time on hold before a rep answered the phone. When he did I wasn't really filled with confidence. Well the return / replacement went exactly as he described.

They had UPS show up with a label to pick up the unit on Friday, I had a brand new player waiting for me when I got home yesterday. It seems to work just fine. the remote seems a little finicky but i think i remember folks saying that. It has played dvd's cd-rs and everything else I have thrown at it. I still have to get a dvd-a or 2 but so far so good with the replacement

I dropped the coin on one last night.
They had free shipping, so that sort of offset the slight price increase.
I needed something anyway for the living room.
I have not owned a tv in 10 + years and a friend made me take one
he was given so I guess I might as well tinker around.

Bumping this to see if you all are happy with your 4960's?  I am going to get a new DVD and it would be nice if they play 24bit, PAL, etc.

Do these play 24/48 only or will they do 24/96 as well?
