check my work here. Techie question;batt box & XLR
« on: June 22, 2008, 07:37:48 PM »
So i have rigged up a little experiment here.  for now this is just one channel.

9v batt box that provides 9v to pin3 of my mic, sig pin2, grnd pin1.
in the box i have 10u NP caps on pins 2&3 on the output side(going to the recorder), to block p48 and stop 9v from hitting recorder input.
so If i just tie pin3 to grnd on the recorder side, and p48 is on, it will fry correct??

so, should I just leave pin3 on the batt box output unconnected(for xlr)?  will this mess up the CMR of the balanced input, and create noise?  I know the proper way is to use a transformer on the outputs of the batt box, but i'm trying to do this on the cheap.

As it is now, it works as xlr output(recorder side) with grnd pin1, pins 2 & 3 each connected to it's own 10u cap(signal is only on pin2 though).

If I tie pin3 to grnd via the 10u cap, then the 9v DC that is powering the mic will reach pin3 of the recorder, and p48 is not blocked, (at least not on pin3) correct??  I thought a cap to grnd can't block DC, it will just filter it??

Or I'll take a guess...  P48 must be present on both pins for the crkt to function, since it's not on pin2(because of the series 10u cap), no p48??

I see how the series cap and res to grnd works though, I just don't know the out Z of the mic.  ;D

All this is just a quick test.  I'll eventually just build the crkt that you helped me with some months back(thanks!).  It's more complex, but will eliminate the batteries though...

I see now :-[.  My whole response above was under the impression that the pin3's were still connected.  Hence the cap to grnd not blocking DC question.  I understand now!  Thanks for taking the time to draw that little schemo, it's clear now. +T.
