Suggest some dorm room friendly monitors
« on: December 22, 2008, 11:19:10 PM »
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/audio_speakers?mco=MjQ1MDcyMQ

ordering a new macbook for my Umaine Transfer coming up in January. Have some AKG 240 cans, but you need the openness of speakers sometime. It would be preferable to be on the apple site and around 100ish.

Thanks

Listening party date to come ;)

Are you looking for powered monitors (active) or are you going to be amp'ing them yourself?

I would think powered would be better. I don't really want an amp, I am sick of having lots of shit.

Those Harman Kardon Soundsticks with the iSub for $169 is probably the only really great sounding item on that page that is <$200.

I used to have the old iSub for my computer playback and it was awesome.

I think anything on there around $100 for serious listening will disappoint you...esp. if you have more than a few people around.
That said, there are several that I've never listened to personally.

Some good points.  Yeah Harman Kardon stuff I have heard tends to sound good.  I will spend the extra money, I mean I will lose my mind without good music and playback. You have to be able to chill

The Bose® Companion® 2 Series II Multimedia Speaker System sound really good for the price. I just got a pair for Christmas. The more expensive Bose are REALLY nice but at a big cost premium.

I've had a pair of the Audioengine 5's for well over a year now, and use them as my primary computer playback on my desk.

They are awesome.
For the price, I couldn't be happier.

Highly recommended for a desk or a small room on a bookshelf.
They do go quite loud!

I got a Harman Kardon 2.1 system from a friend, as the Bisco kids would say it can bring the UNTZ.

I got the Klipsch 2.1 system used on eBay for $95 and it sounds awesome but it's got enough power and thump to get you kicked out of the dorm permanently.  >:D
I'm afraid to say it sounds almost as good as my "big" stereo (NAD amp, NHT speakers).
Now you see it:  ADK 51TL,  or MK4/41>KC5>CMC6, or AT4051b/4049a > Wendt X2 > R-09HR
Now you don't:   CA-14c  or DPA4061 > CA ST-9100 > R-09HR

epic

I have a pair of the Creative GigaWorks T20 and they sound very nice for ~$100, possibly cheaper.  If you want a greater low frequency extension, check out the GigaWorks T40 with the dual woofers.  They are more expensive, but still quite nice.  Neither of them has a sub.  Each of them has a very warm flavor, tilted a bit too much toward that end of the spectrum for my tastes, but I am not really complaining for how good they sound overall for $100.

I've got a pair of swan speakers I bought from newegg a couple of years ago for like $170.. they're self powered and sound very, very good.  I'm pretty criticle of audio, my studio has genelec monitors and my home theater has british mission 717m, warfdale for back channels and polk audio for the mid... There's a pair of swans at parts express that seem to be well rated, although they are not the model I bought:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=310-440

I use them on a photo editing system, so sound isn't critical, still they are good for the price.

Good Luck,

John
